Myrrh Essential Oil |
The Three Wise Men brought to Jesus when He was born the gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh.
The Myrrh tree is called 'Commiphora myrrha' and is found in Africa and Middle East. The word 'Myrrh' comes from the Arabic word 'murr' which means bitter. It has a thick, molasses type consistency, with a yellowish-orange colour.
Myrrh is botanically related to Frankincense. What makes the Myrrh tree distinctive is the knotted trunk and white flowers, though often it is without leaves due to the harsh weather conditions.
The tree trunks need to be cut in order for the resin to be released, which is allowed to dry. The resin looks similar to tears on the tree trunk, which is then collected where the sap is distilled by steam to create the essential oil.
Myrrh has 2 primary active compounds called terpenoids and sesquiterpenes, which not only have anti inflamatory and antioxidants, but also have an effect on our emotions, assisting us to remain balanced and calm. Aromatherapists often use both Frankincense and Myrrh to draw on the deeply meditative and healing quality of the oils.
Myrrh is used today to treat a variety of ailments due to its antioxidant potency. It has shown to an effecting treatment for parasitic infections, whilst other researches are studying its potential for fighting cancers.
Myrrh's regenerative properties makes it useful for improving the condition of mature & aging skin. It helps improve the skin's tone, firmness and elasticity, reducing the appears of fine lines and wrinkles. This is why I have made it one of the key ingredients in our Cool Eyes.
