caused by wearing masks.

Have you noticed an increase in breakouts on your face? From your cheeks, nose, mouth, chin and often the neck areas after you’ve removed your mask? If your answer to this question is yes, then ‘Maskne’ – acne mechanica is what scientists are calling this kind of acne which is caused by mask wearing.

We have been wearing masks to protect ourselves from potentially becoming ill as well as protecting others. But it has been causing our skin to become hot, sticky and sweaty underneath the fabric & materials. The friction against our faces can become uncomfortable, though it can foster the growth of bacteria and oil whilst being worn throughout the day.Our pores become clogged with dirt, sweat and oil as the masks keeps these trapped against our skin. In no time, these have developed into acne, particularly in the areas where the mask is resting.

For those who are in an environment where masks are required for longer periods of time, you may notice your skin is drastically more dehydrated, itchy and irritated. This can lead to other conditions like Eczema.Sadly, the acne breakouts and Eczema is happening for younger children as a result of wearing masks.

The masks are trapping all sorts of bacteria under What are some things we can do to prevent and aid these breakouts?

Change your Masks Often – if you have the opportunity, bring spare masks with you to changeover throughout the day.Try not to re-use the same mask to prevent putting the bacteria collected back onto your face.If you’re using the disposal masks, ensure they’re put in bins to prevent others from touching them.If you’re using washable masks, place them in the laundry bag for your next wash.

Keep Hands & Face Clean – Make sure you’re washing your hands, carrying your sanitizers with you as well.If your skin is feeling hot and sweaty, rinse your face with warm water and pat with a tissue. This temporary solution during the day, will assist in preventing the build up of dirt whilst mask wearing.

Wash Your Face – Once at home, and not going out again, cleanse your face and neck thoroughly.Make sure the ingredients are not harsh, to prevent further irritation to your skin’s condition. Some products contain retinyl acetate, parabens, aluminium and alcohol. From the Essentially Lili range, we have two cleansers available. You can choose from Cypress Cleansing Balm which is made with Beeswax, Butters and Essential Oils, or the oil-based Sunflower Cleanser which is great for treating acne.

Should we cleanse with our fingers or towels? – I would suggest to use your finger tips to gently massage the product into your skin whilst stimulating the removal of pollutants as well as encouraging blood flow.Rinse your face and neck with warm water, before using your face towel to pat dry your face.In this way, you’re not using disposable wipes or your face towel to cleanse, which ends up being more environmentally friendly. It will also prevent the built-up bacteria remaining in your face towel. If you prefer to use a face towel for cleansing, make sure you put it in the wash and get a clean one for the next session.

Wearing Foundation under masks – this can also cause your skin’s pores to become clogged with bacteria, particularly if you have to wear the mask for long periods of time.If you can avoid wearing make-up when wearing your mask for long periods, it can help prevent Maskne from occurring underneath.

Watch your dietary intake – irrespective of the breakouts occurring from mask wearing or hormonal changes, there’s plenty of foods that cause our skin to become agitated. These include highly processed foods, sugar, fried foods and alcoholic drinks.Ensure your diet contains plenty of colours and whole foods, are rich in fibre and Vitamins too.

Don’t Pop – this will prevent unnecessary scarring and stress if you treat acne as naturally as possible.

Use Natural Skincare Products – In the mornings, after rinsing your face with warm water, ensure you moisturise your face to prevent it from drying out whilst wearing the mask for the day.At night time, ensure that you moisturise your face after you have cleansed your skin.

There’s a number of all-natural products from the Essentially Lili range which help treat, calm, rebalance and restore the skin’s healthy condition. All of these do not contain any harmful ingredients. For Acne prone skin, suitable also for youngsters and adults, there is Evanesce Balm which helps treat acne gently. It can be used in conjunction with Magic Serum .If your skin is prone to breaking out with both Acne and Rosacea, choose either the Vitamin Rich Mens Face Balm or Vitamin Rich Womens Face Balm.

Exfoliate once a week – – Exfoliating shouldn’t really be done more than once a week to prevent the removal of the necessary natural oils from your skin’s base. However, once a week, as part of the pampering sessions with clay masks and other fun items from your kitchen, exfoliating will allow for dead skin cells and built up bacteria to be removed from your skin, preventing Maskne from occurring. You can do your own steam treatment, then exfoliate you face to aid your skin feeling fabulous again. If you don’t have your own, you can check out my previous blogs for ideas: What’s in Your Fridge?

For other tips, I shared a Blog called How to Treat Cystic Acne in your 30s which many related to especially post pregnancy & during hormonal changes.

Whilst Maskne seems to be part of the new normal, taking care of our skin has altered to accommodate the changes.Remember to keep an eye on your dietary intake, stress levels as well as hygiene processes. Don’t wear used or dirty masks twice, and ensure that your face towels are washed regularly, especially if used as part of the cleansing process. For all-natural products that don’t contain any harmful ingredients, consider the Essentially Lili range which are soft, calming, gentle to use, whilst restoring, rebalancing and aiding the well-being of your skin.

I wanted to mark our 7th birthday with a celebration of reviews and testimonials from customers, sharing your results from using the products. It seems like yesterday when I decided to increase the production of my personal favourite batch of Nourishing Face Balm into samples for distribution and trial.I was never really sure what would happen, if there would be a market for all-natural skincare products, or if anyone would like the products I make.

The best feedback so far has been from my client who has been using the Nourishing Face Balm amongst other products. Dandruff Remedies & Resolutions

Alternative methods to aid dealing
with the discomfort of itchy scalps.

Following on from last month’s blog about bald patches called Hair Loss Alopecia Areata, I wanted to touch on the topic of Dandruff and itchy scalps, which can create distress and anguish, affecting our social and self-esteem, irrespective of our age.

Trying to loosen and remove the scaly skin with a good shampoo scrub is one effective method, though finding a long-term solution for why it’s happening is the better option. What are the common causes for Dandruff?

Dandruff is the name given to a skin condition affecting the scalp, making it itchy, often appearing like white flakes on the head, within the hair and on one’s clothing. Seborrhoeic dermatitis is the body responding to the inflammation caused by overgrowth of yeast (malassezia), causing excess skin cell growth, making the condition more severely irritated and itchy. The most common symptoms include skin infections, redness, swelling, damaged hair follicles and in some cases, balding. Conditions like Eczema and Rosacea, emotional stress, diet, genetics and the health of our immune system can all affect how severe Dandruff can be on our scalp.Often, the condition is treated with anti-fungal shampoos, or antimicrobial therapy, steroids and special diets.

Allergies & Reactions to anything from shampoos, conditioners, hair colouring products, environmental factors and foods. There are loads of commercial shampoos and conditioners available on the market, which contain harmful ingredients like parabens, sodium laureth and lauryl sulfate. These can contribute to aggravating Dandruff as well as causing contact dermatitis. If this is happening to you, stop using the products for a time to monitor whether the condition improves, and look for alternative natural solutions.

Autoimmune Disease or issues is when proteins called free radicals, or auto-antibodies attack our body’s healthy tissues by mistake. It causes the faster production of skin cells, which creates unhealthy and abnormal growth of new skin that forms in flaky, dry patches on the body and scalp. Targeting the overall health and diet is extremely important, in order to normalise the internal system. The other key factor is to prevent the condition worsening, or becoming excessively dry, which can aggravate it.

Food Triggers Dandruff can be made worse by what’s consumed in our diet. Some foods contain inflammation and fungus causing components, which should be avoided.Common culprits include processed sugar, peanuts and some soy products.Cut back the sugar intake, avoid processed foods and oils like safflower, soy, canola, corn and sunflower.

You can read more about Autoimmune Issues & Dirty Foods in the Blog Library. Please click on the following links: Do You Have Autoimmune Issues and Autoimmune Issues Dirty Foods.

Gallery of Pics:Scalps with Dandruff, Curly natural hair, Unsplash B&W Mali Desha.

So what other things can we do to help combat Dandruff and dry itchy scalp?

A healthy diet will not only aid our overall well-being, but will assist preventing dandruff and those conditions that affect our skin’s condition.Ensure your diet includes fruits, vegetables and whole-grain breads and cereals, flaxseeds, walnuts and fish, which are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids. These ingredients will help keep the scalp hydrated and fight against dandruff. Vitamin B7 Biotin can be found in sweet potatoes, egg yolks, almonds as well as salmon. Increase your consumption of anti-fungal foods, which includes garlic, banana, avocado, ginger, flaxseed and coconut oil.

In the previous blog about Hair Loss Alopecia Areata, I mentioned consuming Anti-Inflammatory foods. These will naturally benefit our digestive tract as they provide nutrition as well as a calming effect on our system.Often those suffering from Alopecia Areata are deficient of certain nutrients
Start by avoiding foods which are highly processed and contain loads of sugar.Instead, include foods like beets, broccoli, nuts, seeds, spices like ginger and turmeric, green leafy vegetables, blueberries, coconut oil, bone broth and wild-caught salmon to your list for consumption, which are high in antioxidants, essential fatty acids and necessary minerals.
Changing up your diet can aid how you feel as well as restore autoimmune problems shown in our bodies.

Zinc is a vital mineral which supports hair follicles. Taking a supplement can aid boosting your immune system, whilst repairing your gut’s health, making it more responsive to the threat of free radicals. Not only will the supplements provide therapeutic benefits, it can work as a natural treatment for Alopecia Areata.Foods which are high in zinc include pumpkin seeds, grass-fed beef and lamb, spinach, cashews, chickpeas and yoghurt.

Hormone levels during the teen years are usually high, where the production of oil increases. For pre-teens & teens going through puberty and hormonal changes, one of the best solutions is to ensure your child is taking a multivitamin supplement which contains Vitamin B6 and B12, Biotin, Selenium, Flaxseed Oil and Zinc. These are necessary for healthy cells, skin and hair growth.Recently, I suggested a client obtain this for her teenager from Iherb: MV Teen Multivitamins as it contained a wonderful blend of necessary minerals and vitamins to assist during this pubescent time.

For adults, check out the Iherb selection and ensure these particular vitamins and minerals are contained within the supplement.Search for brands like Future Biotics and Nature’s Bounty, or seek advice from your local Health Store’s Naturopath.

I have also been suggesting clients use an all-natural Swiss made BOOM Hair Soap, which is extremely soft and gentle for any scalp. Please let Kaori Akutsu know that Essentially Lili has sent you to her shop.

Some other tips and home-spa ingredients from your cupboards to help you keep your scalp hydrated:

Clean Your Brushes & Combs – try to avoid sharing your hair accessories with others, and ensure you wash and keep them hygienically cleaned.

Home Spa tips – Using ingredients like Coconut Oil, Tea Tree Oil, Witch Hazel, Aloe Vera, Olive Oil, honey, mashed bananas and yoghurt can be combined together and massaged into the scalp. You don’t have to include all of these!!!Personally, I have found Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) to be too harsh for my own sensitive skin, so I avoid suggesting it for others. Eggs on the other hand, can be quite messy!!

Hair Loss Alopecia Areata

Hair Loss Alopecia Areata
distressing you?

resolution & get your confidence back.

Have you ever seen a clump of your hair falling out, especially whilst in the shower?

There’s nothing more distressing, when bunches of your hair is seen clumped at the drain of the shower.Often this happens as part of pregnancy or post delivery and breast feeding.
Women in particular, just have to ride the anguish of hair-loss, combined with waiting for our hormones to rebalance, and the pre-pregnancy normality to return. For men, it can also cause a lot of distress, though shaving the hair off completely can be one way of solving the embarrassment of hair loss.

But what if your hair is not only falling out, but leaving bald patches all over your scalp? This kind of loss in patches is otherwise known as Alopecia Areata. The immune system’s white blood cells which usually protect us from free radicals, viruses and bacteria, turns and fights against our healthy hair follicles instead. These become smaller, whilst the production of hair slows down drastically.

It sadly doesn’t have a cure, but we usually have to wait patiently for our hair to grow back in its own time. Alopecia Areata can be treated with various kinds of prescribed medications, consisting of Immuno-suppressants, Minoxidil, Corticosteroids, Anthralin or Diphencyprone. However, taking these for longer periods of time can have side effects, consisting of leaving the skin looking lighter in colour or discoloured, causing reactions or irritations, to stomach aches, nausea and tiredness.

Dealing with hair loss can be extremely stressful, especially if constantly monitoring the patches or how much has fallen. It can make us feel insecure, anxious and irritable. For those that want to try an alternative and more healthy option for boosting hair growth, consider these:

Probiotic Supplements – Adding these to your diet can assist your digestive system’s health, aiding and treating various autoimmune conditions, including alopecia areata. Improving the condition of your immune system prevents your body from reacting to threats which can cause inflammation and reactions. The kinds of foods to eat include cultured vegetables, yoghurt, kefir, kombucha and apple cider vinegar.

Zinc – Is a vital mineral which supports hair follicles.

Ginseng – can be taken in either powdered, dried or tablet form. It works by reducing inflammation and boosting our immune functionality and homeostasis: (any self-regulating process by which biological systems tend to maintain stability).Alopecia areata can be treated naturally by including the consumption of red ginseng.

Consuming Anti-Inflammatory Foods – these will naturally benefit our digestive tract as they provide nutrition as well as a calming effect on our system.Often those suffering from Alopecia Areata are deficient of certain nutrients.Start by avoiding foods which are highly processed and contain loads of sugar.Instead, include foods like beets, broccoli, nuts, seeds, spices like ginger and turmeric, green leafy vegetables, blueberries, coconut oil, bone broth and wild-caught salmon to your list for consumption, which are high in antioxidants, essential fatty acids and necessary minerals. Changing up your diet can aid how you feel as well as restore autoimmune problems shown in our bodies.

Quercetin – is a plant pigment (flavonoid) antioxidant which aids in reducing inflammation and fighting damage caused by free radicals. It is often used to treat autoimmune disorders, as it has a strong effect on the bodys’ immunity.Quercetin is found in red wine, onions, berries, apples, green tea, buckwheat tea, Ginkgo biloba, St John’s wort and American elder.Adding it to your diet can stimulate hair regrowth due to quercetin’s anti-inflammatory properties.Supplements and creams can be purchased at your health food stores, but ensure that Quercetin is the main ingredient, or that bromelain, another anti-inflammatory enzyme is included.

Dollop of honey please

Dollop of Honey Please Dec2020

Dollop of Honey Please!

Raw natural golden goodness
aids our health & skin!

QR BLOGDEC20

Don’t you just love a spoonful or a dollop of honey?

Historically, honey was used by the ancient Egyptians as a sacrifice to their gods/deities.It was also added as a sweetener and in making honey cakes, which were then offered to the gods.Honey was also used to embalm their dead. The ancient Egyptians included honey as a topic ointment as its antibacterial properties helped treat infected wounds. They were aware of the secrets contained in a dollop of golden goodness, way back then!

Did you know that Honey contains amazing attributes for our health?Let me share some of them:

Provides a natural source of Energy – Honey contains around 80% natural sugars, 18% water with 2 % consists of minerals vitamins, protein and pollen. It obtained the nickname as ‘a perfect running fuel’, forming liver glycogen, which can be easily absorbed to boost the start of your day. It’s one of the best carbohydrates to consume before exercising, and often found in health bars used by sports-people.Taking a spoonful of Honey first thing in the morning on an empty stomach can give you an immediate kick start to boost your energy levels for the whole day.

Aids with Sleep – Having a spoonful of honey at night time can aid digestion, relax the mind and body as well as assist with obtaining a great night’s sleep. This is because the liver’s glycogen supplies are restocked, preventing the brain from triggering a panicking search for fuel when you wake up.Also, eating raw honey allows the brain to release melatonin, creating small spikes of insulin levels. This stimulates tryptophan in the brain, which converts to serotonin, that converts to melatonin, boosting immunity, rebuilding tissues and cells whilst resting and sleep.Being a natural aid for sleep, honey lowers the risk of other more serious health problems, including hypertension, which can arise from poor sleep.

Powerhouse of Antioxidants – Raw honey taken on a daily basis can promote the levels of antioxidants in your body, which help block free radicals that can create havoc or illness in our system. These powerful antioxidants found in honey contain polyphenols which can reduce the risk of heart disease, whilst boosting the immune system.

Assisting with Weight Management – Replacing sugar with honey can not only lower blood sugar levels, but can also prevent piling on extra kilos. This is due to raw honey activating the hormones to suppress the appetite. However, this does not suggest or recommend the over-consumption of honey as the substitute. To assist with losing weight:Start your day with a high protein breakfast, reduce the refined carbohydrates, add fatty fish to your diet, drink plenty of water, reduce your salt intake and include soluble fibre as well as some exercise to your daily routine.

Aids Allergies to Pollen – Working as a natural relief for allergies due to the bee pollen contained in raw natural honey. It helps boost immunity, as the pollen collected from various flowers in the gardens forms the honey’s genetic make-up. By consuming raw honey like an allergy shot that contains pollen, many sufferers become desensitized to these flowers which would otherwise cause them to have an allergic reaction.

Assists healing wounds – Bandages that have been infused with honey are known to provide healing effect. This is because honey has natural antibacterial properties, making hydrogen peroxide when it reacts with the body’s fluids, which creates an unwelcome environment for bacteria.Honey has also been used in some parts of the world to dress wounds, as well as treating various kinds of ulcers.

On our many travel journeys, we have seen numerous beehives along rugged coastal terrain, with a wonderful selection of plants for the bees to collect. The taste of this raw, organic honey is unlike anything else; it’s like being amongst the flowers that the bees have had the pleasure of pollenating.

What’s the differences between Raw Honey and commercially produced honey?

• Raw honey is the purest form when its crude form is taken immediately from the cells of the honey comb within the bee hive.It will contain bee pollen and propolis two very healthy additions. It may also contain beeswax, together with impurities and dead bees. However, these bits are normally strained out before the raw honey is bottled.

• Raw honey should not be heated above 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit) as it’s the temperature of a bee hive.Raw honey can be strained, but it’s never filtered or pasteurised, nor will it contain other additives.
The colour of raw honey should be opaque, not clear or golden or syrup-like.

• Organic honey will have passed the country’s set of standards and conditions to have the title ‘Organic’ granted.
It is otherwise raw organic honey, not heated above 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit). It would have been processed similarly through the straining process.

• Commercially generated honey requires excessive heat, is chemically refined and processed heavily to obtain the clear, sparkly colour.
This process can destroy and remove the phytonutrients like pollen, vitamins and minerals and enzyme-rich propolis which are beneficial for our health.

• Other non-raw honey or commercially produced jars can be sourced from bees that are treated with antibiotics. The bees may have been given other ‘nourishment’ ingredients including forms of sugar, low-cost syrup, or high fructose corn syrup. Some of these commercial hives may have non-organic materials and additives, and will not have bee pollen in them.

Manuka honey is produced in New Zealand from the 1830s, when bees were brought from England to pollinate the Manuka bush.
Manuka is naturally sweet, has a rich but earthy flavour, containing many beneficial compounds with antibacterial properties. It can be found in its pure form, or added to herbal creams and antibiotics, masks and skincare products. It contains:

•Carbohydrates/sugar,
• Methylglyoxal (MG) and hydrogen peroxide,
• Enzymes such as diastase and glucose oxidase,
• Amino acid proteins which are the building blocks,
• B Vitamins (including B6, thiamine, niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid)
• Organic acids
• Trace minerals such as calcium, folate, phosphorus, potassium
• Flavonoids, polyphenols, alkaloids and volatile compounds.

If you haven’t already tried this honey, see if you can get your hands on it!

Making your own sugar scrub for weekly pampering:

You’ll need 1 teaspoon of raw honey, 4 tablespoons of brown sugar, 2 tablespoons of Olive oil and around 6 drops of essential oil.Choose from Lavender, Tea Tree or Mandarin.
Add the oil and honey, add the sugar and blend well before adding the essential oils.Store in a tight jar and keep in a cool dark place.Use when needed!

Pumpkins are more than Halloween

Pumpkins are More than Halloween

Pumpkins are more than Halloween

Or Cinderella’s Carriage Ride!
There are so many health benefits for you!

QR BLOGNOV20

Pumpkins are more than Halloween, or Cinderella’s carriage ride! They are loaded with health benefits, making it a great all-rounder!

Did you know that the word Pumpkin comes from the Ancient Greek word, ‘Pepon’ which means melon? And that they are amongst the longest domesticated plants, having been cultivated as far back as 7,500 to 5,000 BC?

Over the centuries, the term ‘pepon’ into Latin (peponem), French (pompon), English (pompion) when it was eventually referred to as ‘pumpkin’ by 17th century English colonists when they arrived in north-eastern USA.
Being native to southern United States and north-eastern Mexico, half the world’s production of pumpkins is now grown in China and India.

According to Wikipedia, “ In 2018, global production of pumpkins, which included squash and gourds, topped 27.6 million tonnes with – China 8.1m, India 5.3m, Ukraine 1.3m and Russia 1.2m each”. These volumes are astounding!!The only place it’s not grown is Antarctica!

It’s considered as a winter squash, with its smooth but ribbed exterior, often orange in colour though there are variations of yellow and green.
Regarded as a fruit because it’s a botanical berry known as a pepo, which has seeds and pulp inside, that are consumables, together with the exterior rind of some types.Pumpkins usually weigh anywhere between 3 and 8 kilograms, though some have tipped the scales over 34 kilos. Recently, my uncle in Sicily told me that his neighbour grew a 1.2 metres wide pumpkin weighing over 95 kilos!!

Consumed in the autumn months, traditionally for Thanksgiving in the US in a Pumpkin Pie.But for some of us, we love it whenever we can get our hands on it!!It’s one of my all-time favourite vegetables!
Other favourite dishes include pumpkin soup, roasted pumpkin, risotto, or in a Moroccan filo pastry with peppers and spices.

If you’re interested in trying out new recipes, besides roasted pumpkin and delicious soup, see:see the recipes on Taste webpage: Pumpkin Recipes, or alternative recipes at Favourite Pumpkin Recipes.

What’s so great about Pumpkins, its seeds and oil?

Using cold pressed Pumpkin Seed Oil (Cucurbita pepo L) is far better as the nutrients and antioxidants are maintained in the extraction process. Benefits of Pumpkin Seeds and using the Oil:

• Because of the orange carotenoid pigments, alpha and beta carotene, pumpkins have the wonderful colour, offering provitamin A, which our bodies enjoy when consumed. The seeds are also great for consumption and provide wonderful benefits for our overall health and well-being too.

• It is rich in Vitamins A, B, C, D & E, with minerals and proteins, containing over 60% unsaturated fatty acids, Omega 3 & 6.

• The high vitamin and mineral content makes Pumpkin Seed oil a wonderful inclusion for cosmetics and skincare products, improving the overall appearance of your skin.

• The colour of Pumpkin seed oil can vary from light to very dark green or red in colour. This depends on the sample’s thickness – where thin layers appear green, with thicker layers red. This is known as ‘dichromatism’ where varying colours can be seen depending on how it’s observed. Image shown below in the Gallery of images.

Pumpkin seeds are rich in Antioxidants, which help protect the body’s cells, assisting the prevention of chronic conditions like diabetes, autoimmune disorders and heart disease.

• Pumpkin seed & the oil derived from the seeds can help maintain a healthy heart . Tests conducted after using the seeds showed that cholesterol levels and blood pressure dropped, both contributing to a healthy heart. The levels of nitric oxide in our bodies can also rise from consuming the seeds, which encourage blood flow, assisting the efficient functionality of the heart.

• For women, the menopausal symptoms can be improved as diastolic blood pressure is reduced, increasing good cholesterol.

• Including the seeds in our diet can improve the functioning of the bladder reducing its over activity.

• Daily addition of pumpkin seeds to your diet can help improve the quality of your sleep. They contain nutrients and amino acids like magnesium and tryptophan, aiding with insomnia, restlessness, how quickly you fall asleep as well as the length of time sleeping.

• Including the seeds can stablise & regulate blood sugar levels, preventing the sudden rise, spikes and crashes. When blood sugar levels are high, they can create symptoms similar to diabetes, like nausea, needing to urinate often, fatigue and an overwhelming thirst.Being rich in protein and fibre, pumpkin seeds slows down sugars being absorbed in the bloodstream;

• The contents of zinc which helps balance hormone levels that can benefit hair re-growth, reversing loss;
