Favourite Vegetable Oils

Sunflowers

Favourite
Vegetable Oils

Otherwise known as Carrier Oils, these allow Essential Oils to be applied directly to the skin safely & without causing irritations.
Sunflower is actually one of the richest Carrier Oils with so many benefits, used in Sun Kissed Serum

The Vegetable Oils used for Product making are not the kind you would normally buy at the Supermarket. Those in the stores are exposed to direct Sunlight, shop lighting and heating which can cause the oils to degrade. Extra Virgin Oil is normally stored in dark glass bottles, so taking this from the back of the row is a good idea!

As our bodies’ cell walls and membranes contain quite a lot of fats and oils, it makes sense for us to use nutritious oils in our foods and skincare products. These will help us maintain the fluidity of our cells.

Did you know that using oils as a cleanser actually helps your skin? The oil softens any sebum which
may be blocking the pores, allowing these to be removed.

There are plenty of Vegetable Oils to choose from, which vary in colour, natural fragrance, and price. Familiar oils include Apricot Kernel, Sweet Almond and Coconut. These are found in many skincare products which help repair and calm sensitive skin.

The following Vegetable Oils are some that I use in the Essentially Lili range because I love what they do for the skin:

Argan (Argania Spinosa) originates from Southern Morocco which makes this product quite expensive. It is yellow in colour and has a lot more Vitamin E (Tocopherol) than olive oil. It is resistant to oxidation with good free radical scavengers. It’s great for damaged and mature skin as it assists the restructuring of the cells.

Avocado (Persea Gratissima) contains essential fatty acids that our body needs but cannot produce. These help create and rebuild new cells, contain omega-3, omega-6 fatty acids, Linoleic Acid (LA), Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA).So if this is what Avocado does for our bodies from the inside, the outside
is going to love it just as much.

Avocado originally came from Central America, but now is grown around the world. It is rich in Vitamins A, B1, B2, D, E, and Beta carotene. Classified as a monosaturated oil, Avocado is best suited for dry skin conditions in topical applications. It should be green in colour if unadulterated and it comes from the flesh of the fruit. It is great for rehydrating, regenerating and helping the elasticity of the skin. With other carrier oils, Avocado enriches the vitamin and protein content.

Calendula (Calendula Officinialis) has anti-inflammatory properties and promotes wound healing. It is used in sun and after-sun products, as well as to help children with nappy rashes, grazes and Mums who are nursing.

Evening Primrose (Oenothera biennis) comes from the seeds of the plants which are grown worldwide. It is very rich in Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA), a fatty substance used for skin conditions like Eczema.Evening Primrose is used in various skin products, creams, bath oils and hair conditioners as it helps the skin’s elasticity and therefore repairing damaged, dry and aging skin. Taking supplements can also be used to help calm skin conditions from within.

Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) is actually a liquid wax. Jojoba resembles the sebum of the skin very closely and is naturally rich in Vitamin E. This helps promotes the glow in our complexions, as this oil is very light and is absorbed quickly.

Sunflower Oil (Helianthus annuus) has very little scent compared to other vegetable /carrier oils, and absorbs easily into the skin, leaving very little residue. Sunflower Oil has high concentrates of Vitamins A, B, D and E, as well as minerals, lecithin, insulin. It is a great product for the skin, adding UV protection qualities together with the unsaturated essential fatty acids.Sunflower is amongst the ingredientsfound in Sun Kissed Serum to help with the effects of the sun for those that have been ‘kissed’.

Wheatgerm Oil (Triticum sativum) is obtained from the germ of the wheat. It is extremely high content in Vitamin E which is a natural antioxidant and preservative, together with essential fatty acids, Vitamins A, B & D. Wheatgerm helps promote circulation and increase blood flow, which is great for damaged or scarred skin.It helps form new cells to improve appearance of skin, and to help repair sun damage to the skin.

Wheatgerm is found in our Vitamin Rich Range to help with skin that has Acne / Rosacea, has been irritated, damaged and needs some love and affection. The Vitamin Rich Mens Face Balm and Vitamin Rich Womens Face Balm and Evanesce Balm for those that have Acne which needs treatment.

Vitamin E (Tocopherol Acetate) is a natural preservative and a strong antioxidant. It is used in various skincare products such as acne, lip balms, anti-wrinkle, cleansers and peels for sensitive skin.

What I find amazing is how much goodness these Vegetable Oils have.Their wonderful properties boost our skin’s reserves with goodness and help maintain the elasticity whilst promoting cell regeneration.Combined with the Essential Oils, there really is no need to include other unnatural ingredients to our blends. In future blogs, I can share more information about how wonderful these Vegetable Oils are, in the quest of choosing the best ingredients for making the Essentially Lili Skincare products. If there are any Oils that you would like me to include, please let me know below.

Essential Oils

Essential Oils

Essential Oils
are antiseptic anti-inflammatory & rejuvenates skin cells!

This is what I love
about Essential Oils.
When I studied
Aromatherapy & attended
blending courses in London
I appreciated how wonderful they really are.

I went to London for 2 weekends of blending whichwas attended by a group of fabulous women from all walks of life. We spent the first day inhaling, smelling, guessing, imagining and enjoying the natural fragrances of the Essential Oils variety our teacher had brought in. The range of top, middle and base notes from the Essential Oils, the way it made us feel, the smells we liked and those we didn’t enjoy as much.

Some of us left for the evening feeling invigorated, whilst some of us had to lie down from the sore head we got from of inhaling the range of Essential Oils.Ironically, when you read the benefits of Essential Oils, and their therapeutic capabilities, it’s no wonder we were feeling a mix of these emotions and symptoms. It was like an overdose of too many good things at once!

There are so many Essential Oils to choose from. There are those ‘Must Have In Your Cupboards’ like Lavender and Tea Tree Oil, others are nice to haves like Frankincense and Geranium, together with the would really love to have but they are sooooo expensive like Rose Absolute.

Essential Oils have many different properties. They are Antiseptic, anti-inflammatory, astringent and wound healing. They help stimulate circulation, can help smooth fine lines, rejuvenate cells, can unblock skin cells and promote cell growth. They are refreshing, cooling and help with hot flushes, sweating, headaches and fatigue.

With my Aromatherapy Studies, I compiled a list of my Essential Oils with the benefits they have, as well as who shouldn’t be using particular oils. Not everyone can enjoy the assistance of the Essential Oils due to their age, if they are expecting or nursing, or if they are undergoing treatment for another condition. This is why I ask about allergies, intolerances and conditions before giving products to someone.

In the Newsletter, I wrote about Lavender (Lavandula Angustifolia) and how it’s regarded as the ‘Go To Essential Oil.’ Best known for originating in Provence, France, blends also come from Bulgaria, Croatia, England as well as other popular places. It has many wonderful properties and suitable for all ages.Lavender is anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and with skin healing properties, reduces irritations and assists the healing of wounds.Lavender is also relaxing and can help de-stress the body and mind.It also has antibacterial properties, and diluted with vegetable oil, can be applied directly to the skin.It is gentle enough for youngsters and fabulous for the skin cell regeneration of those with mature skin!

My other favourite is Frankincense (Boswellia Thurifera) which I use in my Frankincense Face Serum for the over 30s.Frankincense comes from the Middle East.It is also antiseptic, astringent, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, has regenerative and skin healing properties.Frankincense helps improve the tone of mature and damaged skin, reducing scars as well as excess oiliness.I use Frankincense in quite a few products due to the variety of benefits it provides, though the Serum is my favourite go to boost for my skin.

Tangerine (Citrus reticulate) comes from Italy and has antiseptic as well as antispasmodic properties. It is great for helping circulation, digestion, relaxes the nerves as well as being sedative, assisting with stomach and digestive and is depurative.A fabulous inclusion for Mums who are expecting and nursing as it assists whilst they take care of their feet with Tango Twinkle Toes!

Geranium Egyptian (Pelargonium graveolens) is another of those Essential Oils that can help with so many conditions. It has antiseptic, astringent and properties for skin healing. It also regulates and balances skin sebum production, particularly if you have oily and combination skin types. It helps with broken capillaries, varicose veins, improves skin elasticity and tightens the skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles. It also helps promote blood circulation and can help balance irritability and emotions.

Geranium Egyptian works well with Carrot Seed (Daucus carota). Carrot Seed has also become a favourite of mine especially to help improve the skin’s tone, capillaries and the rejuvenation process.

Both of these Essential Oils can be found in Essentially Lili Products: Men’s Aftershave Facial Oil, Hydrating Face Balm, theVitamin Rich Mens Face Balm and Vitamin Rich Womens Face Balm, Diamond Era Balm, Sun Kissed Balm and Changing Seasons for Menopause.

Geranium is key ingredient for Geranium Hands & Body Butter. Carrot Seed is found in Oasis Balm (for Psoriasis), Renew Balm (for Eczema), Diamond Era Serum (for Over 50s mature skin) and Sun Kissed Serum (for Sunspots).

The amazing aspect of Essential Oils is if they are treated with respect, stored away from direct sunlight and not ingested without the assistance of a Clinical Aromatherapist, they can have so many wonderful benefits for everyday living.Used with a Carrier or Vegetable Oil will prevent the strength of the Essential oils burning or irritating the skin.I will blog my favourite Vegetable Carrier oils next time.

Pick Your Ingredients

Pick Your Ingredients

Pick Your Ingredients

On Saturday 11th March, Essentially Lili attended the Health & Safety information event at Volkhaus in Weidikon, Zurich.

For Essentially Lili, the Event was about being present, away from home and the comfort of helping others from my computer. I loved meeting people, engaging with them and hearing their personal stories whilst sharing my own in return.

There is comfort shared in having compassion and understanding for each other’s journey, the frustrations and resolutions whilst being able to give reassurance that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

At our table, we had a ‘Pick Your Ingredients’ exercise which allowed visitors to look at our jars filled with coloured beads and think about what is included in the everyday products bought.

Did you know that the Cosmetics Industry only has to include between 15 and 18% of Natural and Organic ingredients in order to state on the label that their product is ‘All Natural and Organic’?That means the rest of the 82-85% of ingredients can be whatever they want it to be.

Whilst there are many that claim to be making all Natural products, they can actually include alcohols, parfums, artificial fragrances, synthetic and petroleum based ingredients to complete the process of making their products.

So a product with pictures of Lavender, Olive Oil, Rosehip Seeds or Geranium flowers doesn’t necessarily mean it will be filled with those ingredients. It could merely be the parfum or fragrance of these ingredients, which is misleading to say the least.

Whilst I was studying for my Diploma in Holistic Skincare Products, one of the lessons was about the ingredients contained in mass produced products. These ingredients are in baby products, shampoos, conditioners, makeup, talc, sunscreens, hand and body lotions.

I felt quite ill after doing this subject and it only reinforced my promise not to make products that will compromise on the integrity of All Natural Ingredients contained in the Essentially Lili Range.

The Industry has been catering for people who can put all sorts of products on their skin without really worrying about what the ingredients do to their skin. But for those of us who have super sensitive skin, this is not the case. The reactions to these ingredients are often so sudden, causing redness, itching, burning sensations and nothing can seem to calm this down.

The Pick Your Ingredients Activity became an eye opener for those that came to check out and try the challenge. What did the Coloured Beads Represent?

Blue – Represents Water/ Aqua. This can cause your skin to dry out as moisture is drawn from your skin by the environment, heat, sun and cold weather.

Red – Represents Detergents called P-phenylenediamine, 4-MMPD Sulphate, Diaminobenzene, Ammoniated mercury and Sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS/SLES) & foaming agents which should be avoided. The main source of absorption is via the mucous membranes of the mouth. Found in soaps, detergents, shampoos, mouthwash, hand cream, cleansers, hair dyes (Permanent & Semi Permanent) as well as toothpaste. It can be stored in the liver, heart, lungs and brain. It can damage the eyes, particularly of children. It can cause skin irritations, mutagenic effects, may cause hair loss, prolonged exposure can cause skin damage, moderately toxic by ingestion.

Pink – Represents Binding Agents like gum, waxes and fats.

Purple – Represents Nanoparticles are ultra-fine particles which possess certain properties due to their tiny size. This allows them to accumulated in the body, possibly by topical use. They may trigger potentially harmful chemical reactions. Nanoparticles include titanium dioxide & zinc oxide for sunscreen products.

Chemical blocks may be absorbed by the skin and work by absorbing the UV light. This causes a chemical reaction in the molecule of block, which may release free radicals. The skin damage can cause photosensitivity and blockers known to do this include: octocrylene, octyl-methoxycinnamate (octinoxate), benzophenone-3, (oxybenzone) and benzophenone-4 (sulisobenzone). If these penetrate the skin before it absorbs the UV photon, then these free radicals are released into the skin.It can increase the risk of cancer and contributes to skin ageing.

White – Represents Synthetics like fragrances & colours, Talc & Toluene.Phthalates listed as Perfumes/Fragrances preserves synthetic scents. There are Over 200 Synthetic Fragrances used in Cosmetics. The label only has to state ‘Fragrance’ so you have no way of knowing which of the 200 are in your product. The fragrance can mask the product going off, provide no benefits, so best avoided. These are often not listed on the ingredients but are contained in health & beauty products. These can be found in Nail polish, lacquers and soft plastics such as pet and infant chew toys. These can adversely affects male sperm, increases testosterone and oestrogen, has been found in Breast Cancer.

Talcum powder – Is chemically similar to Asbestos. It is found in many baby products, including powders, feminine powders, condom lubricants and cosmetics. As a feminine powder or spray it can cause ovarian cancer.

Toluene – Found in most perfumes, nail polish and cosmetics. Acts as an endocrine disruptor, potential carcinogen, may cause birth defects.

Black – Represents Solvents derived from Petroleum found in brake & hydraulic fluid like anti-freeze. Includes Propylene, Butylene & Glycol, Mineral oils & petrolatum. These are without odour or colour, it’s cheap and works well at combining ingredients. The solvent derived from used in brake and hydraulic fluids like antifreeze.

It can penetrate the outer layers of the skin and used as a humectant. It leaves a film that traps the moisture along with toxins & waste that would normally be eliminated through the skin.It can be found in deodorant, shaving gel, conditioner, shampoo, toothpaste, face creams, baby wipes and cosmetic, baby lotions, foundation creams, mascara, deodorants, lipsticks & suntan lotion.

It may cause respiratory & throat irritations, central nervous system depression, blood & kidney disorders. It could cause nystagmus (involuntary movement of the eyes, usually side to side but ca be up and down or circular, lymphocytosis;it can irritate the skin and may cause dermatitis & conjunctivitis. Ingestion may cause pulmonary oedema, brain damage, hypoglycaemia, intravascular haemolysis. In extreme cases, it may cause death. Possible carcinogen.

Brown – Represents Preservatives, Q15, Antiseptic, includes Parabens Includes Parabens (methyl-, propyl-, butyl- ethyl-) Proyply-Alcohol.Parabens are added to stop microbial growth and extend the shelf life of the products. Many Skincare Products contain Parabens, those with citrus seed may have been sprayed with parabens. They can be harmful if inhaled or swallowed, they can cause irritation of the skin, eyes and respiratory tract. It can cause allergic reactions on the skin, of which symptoms include itching, redness and pain. And it can affect hormones and have been found in Breast tumours .These have also been found in carbonated drinks.

Proyply-Alcohol – is an antiseptic used in cosmetics, shampoos, shaving products, waterless hand cleansers, mouthwash (25-30%) and in the preparation of bottled water, carbonated drinks and decaffeinated coffee. In the mouthwash, it has been linked to mouth and throat cancers.

Q15 – This is a preservative found in many cosmetics. It is a water soluble anti-microbial agent that has proven active against bacteria, but less active against yeast. It was found to be responsible for over 12% of allergic reactions in an American study. Not known if Q-15 can be absorbed through the skin for the carcinogen producing action to occur. It can react in the body with other chemicals to produce nitrosamines (known carcinogens.) Known formaldehyde releaser, may be a major cause of dermatitis , people who may be allergic to formaldehyde can potentially have problems with this ingredient.

Orange – Add a little bit of body Acidity regulators like Ethanloamines used with preservatives like Diazolidinyl Urea. It prevents bacterial growth, though it’s not effective against fungi. These are acidity regulators and used normally with other Ingredients like DEA Cocamide. Amines react with nitrosating agents to form nitrosamines, which are carcinogenic. These are found in soaps, shampoos, bubble bath, lotions, cosmetics, laundry detergents. It can severely irritate body tissues, can cause dermatitis and may be corrosive to the eyes.

Green – Essential Oils like Lavender, Frankincense, Cypress, Sweet Orange, Myrrh, Rose, Palmarosa, Tea Tree, Sandalwood & Jasmine are just a few of the many wonderful natural fragrances available.

Yellow – Butters & Vegetable Oils, like Cocoa & Shea Butter, Avocado, Jojoba, Wheatgerm, Baobab, Tamanu, Neem Oils. Also included are Herbs, clay, mud, flowers, leaves, roots, nuts, seeds, beeswax, milk, honey, yoghurt & fats.

If the Green and Yellow ingredients have been organically sourced, free from pesticides and haven’t been doctored during the bottling stages, they can have some amazing effects on the mind, body and spirit.Their natural scents are liberating, refreshing, calming, soothing, relaxing and uplifting.

The vegetable oils are rich in vitamins, often with natural UV protection, with antioxidants as they enrich your skin with goodness and benefits.

The butters are creamy and literally melt in your hands once in contact with your body’s temperature.
And making All Natural products that contain only these ingredients is definitely a more luxurious way to treat and rejuvenate your skin on a daily basis, without fear of what damage is happening to your body.

Dry Skin During Winter

Renew Balm Dry Skin During Winter

Dry Skin In Winter

Our 5 year old playing in the snow without gloves during Swiss winter caused his hands to dry out, hurting the knuckles when he had to bend them.

Dry Skin and the Winter months wherever you are, the weather can be cruel to especially if you are prone to your skin drying out quickly, cracking and becoming irritated.Eczema loves to play havoc during the cold season which is not pleasant if you suffer badly.

Last year, during the cold Swiss winter, our 5 year old son enjoyed playing in the snow at kindergarten without his gloves. After a few days, his hands and knuckles were red and sore from drying out.He found it hard to dress himself and play with his Lego as bending his hands hurt a lot.He was also in a habit of using lots of soap when washing his hands and not rinsing properly, which was also drying the skin.

For him, we started monitoring him whilst he washed his hands to make sure there was no residual soap. as well as drying the water off. At bed time, we applied Renew Balm to his hands, then put a pair of socks on his hands to keep the product contained, allowing it to penetrate into his dry skin whilst he slept. We only had to carry on with this routine for a week, which gave his dry skin a chance to repair.

Here are a few other suggestions for taking care of your Dry Skin During Winter Months.

1. Hydration
Make sure you keep your body hydrated and replenished with plenty of water. This helps your body to function, flush out toxins and keeps your skin looking fabulous. The recommended daily intake of fluids for children aged 5-8 years of age, 5 glasses (1 litre); from 9-12 years of age, 7 glasses (1.5 liters); from 13+ to Adults, 8-10 glasses (2 litres).

2. Avoid Hot Water
Make sure you only wash your face and neck with lukewarm or tepid water. This includes your baths, showers, shaving, cleansing and exfoliating. When your skin is sensitive and prone to drying out, you want to make sure that the temperature is not going to cause more damage, and break the tiny veins in your face.Blotches are likely to happen when super hot water is applied to your face.If you really want to have a steamy hot shower, ensure the water is on your back or chest, but not directly on your face.

3. Be Gentle with Your Skin – all the time!
Try not to use harsh ingredients on your face.Avoid techniques that require you to pull or stretch your skin.Use gentle circular upward motions, and pamper your skin by tapping and stimulating the blood flow to your face. This will help you feel wonderful as you get ready to start your day or prepare for a restful night.

4. Moisturise Your Face
It’s important to ensure you keep your face moisturised for your day out in the cold weather. Use a good one that keeps your skin feeling soft and nourished, without the need to keep reapplying throughout your day.Often products are water based and fluid, which tend to be drawn from the skin quicker than butter and oil based products.
We make a range of moisturisers for various ages which help make the skin feel soft and nourished.
Natural Baby Moisturising Oil For Babies & Children,
Youth Face Balm for Under 30s,
Hydrating Face Balm for men Over 30s,
Nourishing Face Balm for women Over 30s and
Diamond Era Balm for women Over 50s.
We also make the Vitamin Rich Mens Face Balm and Vitamin Rich Womens Face Balm if your skin needs more tender loving care due to irritation or damage, and Evanesce Balm for those that have Acne which needs treatment.

5. Don’t Forget Your Hands, Feet & Body
Your body also needs to stay nourished in order to seal the moisture in your skin. The butter based products literally melt onto your skin, helping it to stay soft and nourished. Our Geranium Hands & Body is lush and great for applying all over the body and suits expecting and nursing mums. For those that love Peppermint, Mint Body Butter is so delish you will be tempted to eat it … please don’t though! Peppermint Feet is a favourite for those that have cracked heels. It also helps with fungal infections and smelly feet.Though Peppermint shouldn’t be used if you’re expecting and nursing, so try Tango Twinkle Toes instead!Made with Tangerine, my daughter and I named it imagining expectant & nursing mums wanting to dance with their little ones whilst they were being taken care of!

6. Rug Up & Stay Warm With Breathable Fibers
Prevention is always best, so make sure you keep your gloves on when out in the cold weather. Wearing Cottons also helps your skin breathe and prevents irritation.Avoid wearing synthetics, polyesters and other fabrics which can cause your skin to sweat and itch.Pyjamas feel nicer when they are cotton too, particularly if you have skin prone to getting irritated whilst you sleep.

7. Have A Cleansing Routine at Night Time.
Did you know you are only meant to cleanse at night time? The reason for this is because our skin is subjected to pollution, dust and smog from traffic and the environment we live in.It builds up on our skin and if we don’t cleanse it out, the muck can begin to clog our pores.Make sure you are gentle when cleansing and to include your neck and shoulders if they are also exposed to the environment. Remove your makeup with either Almond or Coconut Oil.If you don’t like using oils, try removing makeup with a little Aloe Vera instead. Then you can use our Cypress Cleansing Balm which is made with Beeswax, Butters and Essential Oils.It feels wonderful as it penetrates the skin’s reserves – it’s just like having an all natural Botox fill!

8. Monitor the Temperature in the Home
During the winter months, the temperature at home is usually really warm and toasty. This often high temperature dries out the moisture in the air, and affects us with dry skin the most.In the mornings, you should start with opening your windows and changing the air in the home, refreshing any stuffiness. This is particularly important if you have sensitivity to dust or dust mites which thrive in warm climates. In the evenings, you can place bowls of water in your rooms to prevent your skin from dehydrating. You will be pleasantly surprised how much water remains in the bowl the following morning. You can also turn on your humidifiers to replace any moisture which is lost from having the heating on.Steamers are also great, especially if you are able to add Essential Oils to freshen and help clear any signs of Congestion and Sinuses.
We make Concentrated Serums which mums have been using in the bath to help their little ones with congestion and coughs. The carrier oil makes the products safe to use in the bath, which are Kids Breathe Easy Concentrate and Breathe Easier Concentrate .They can also be applied to the chest, feet and tips of the nose for easy breathing. For infants, it can be used in a difuser 30 minutes before being put to bed and on nearby linen. For 1 years of age up, you can apply to their pyjamas and feet.Direction are with the Product information.

9. Patience …
Patience is key especially if your skin dries out very quickly during the winter months. You have to keep applying, keep drinking fluids, keep yourself rugged up, stay moisturised and monitored your clothing and temperature all the time to prevent your skin from cracking. It’s often frustrating especially if your skin feels like sandpaper and looks like it’s been hacked by a knife. With time, and persistence, it will get better for sure.Just be patient!

10. Lastly… start all over again from Step No 1
And we go back to the top .. Hydration, Avoid Hot Water, Be Gentle With Your Skin – All the Time, Moisturise Your Face, Don’t Forget Your Hands, Feet & Body, Rug Up & Stay Warm with Breathable Fibers, Have a Cleansing Routine at Night Time, Monitor the Temperature in the Home and have Patience!

These are the steps I found worked best for me and when I don’t do these, my skin suffers for it.

And to treat yourself, if you love muckingaround with Masks & Facials, you might enjoy doing this too:
1 teaspoon of Pink Clay mixed with 2 teaspoons of Aloe Vera, mixed onto your palm.
Apply to your face and allow to set.
When it dries, apply some warm water to soften before removing with either tissues or cotton wool.

The pink clay has a unique blend of Kaolinite, Iron, Montmorillonite, Illite and Calcite. It helps to detoxify your skin, removing any dead cells and allows the creation of new ones whilst leaving you feeling refreshed.

The Festive Season

The Festive Season

This picture was taken in 2012 at Burj Khalifa, Dubai, UAE.The hanging decorative butterflies look like snowflakes!

The Festive Season is about being amongst family and friends, sharing, giving, loving, laughing, relaxing and taking time out to appreciate what is important!

We love the Festive Season for all that it represents. For some, it’s about celebrating their religious beliefs. For others, it’s being amongst family and friends:- sharing, giving, loving, laughing, relaxing and taking time out to appreciate what is important in life.

For us, we have spent many years abroad and away from our loved ones.

When we first married in Jan 2004, I moved to be with my husband in Dubai, where he was already working. I remember feeling out of place as the newlywed trying to fit in, get a job and make new friends.

There was an Expat Mums group that I asked to join, despite not having a child! I was invited to attend a meeting with this group of ladies, which later changed their name to include women like me who had no little ones at home or school.

Here I met two remarkable women who embraced and accepted me into their family circle and have been our friends ever since. Knowing we had no family in Dubai and not wanting us to be alone, they invited us to be part of their family Christmases and showed us what loving, sharing, laughing, acceptance was all about. We still talk about that 2004 Christmas in Dubai as though it was yesterday, only now their kids are all grown up!!

We meet when we can, whether in the UK over the summer break, or in Dubai on our way back from visiting family in Australia. We feel quite priviliged to have shared many wonderful memories together since that time with all of our families.

Today, we reflect on the year 2016. It has been a year of loss and sadness, failures, triumphs and sucesses. With hindsight we wonder what we would have done differently or better with our choices. We look at the friendships we have made and lost along the way and wonder why they are no longer. Some of these friendships were only meant to teach us something about ourselves, whilst others remained for a season. Some have been true relationships that have withstood the test of time and distance. We hope to learn from these chapters in our lives, as our experiences enrich and teach us how to become better and more decent people.

We look at our children and are grateful that they safe and in good health, able to enjoy the freedoms of where they live. We often take these subtle things for granted when in fact, we should be grateful and happy for all that we have.

So on that note, we hope that you have been amongst loved ones, laughing, eating and enjoying eachother’s company. We hope no-one has spent the festive season alone.

At Essentially Lili we wish 2017 brings you success, happiness, health, love, peace, joy and the desires of your heart.

Please be kind to one another irrespective of your personal beliefs and ambitions. Be mindful of those who have less or nothing as we reflect on how lucky and fortunate we are. And let’s make the world a better place for everyone… especially the next generation.

Customer Satisfaction

Keep Trying Don't Quit

Customer Satisfaction

The best kind of satisfaction is reading how Happy your customer is with the results. Though seeing the results for yourself is an amazing feeling!

Testimonials

Customer Satisfaction is the Ultimate Success Story..

I’m sure we all love when someone goes the extra mile to provide genuine Customer Service, and that person makes you feel special and important to them. The service industry used to always be about ensuring customers were looked after. We gave the best service which was then communicated to our managers at Performance Review time.

Ironically this seems to be missing lately as businesses are more interested in making their money, rather than connecting with those they are helping. Some situations are so irritating. For example, when you pick up the phone to resolve a crisis or situation, and the person at the other end isn’t interested in helping you fix the problem. Usually escalation is the only way to have these kinds of problems sorted.

I remember a time whilst travelling in Europe, I wanted to ask the lady at the Customer Service Desk about the trains. Whilst I was asking the question, she proceeded to shut the blinds in my face, her eyes facing downwards as she spoke into her microphone, ‘I’m closed!’ Oh the shock on my face, thinking how can she be sitting at the customer service desk when she didn’t want to help anyone?

This was just so against the grain of what I had been doing all my years working for Blue Chip companies around the globe. Communication is important, as well as being honest and offering assistance to help resolve situations. In my opinion, this makes the best kind of employees, and are the type that Clients and Managers always like to speak positively about.

At Essentially Lili, we have heard good and bad things, all of which are to help improve and build rapport, reputation and credibility. In our previous Blogs, we don’t always get things right the first time and with feedback, we are able to change, evolve and improve … or in some cases, scrap altogether!

What we love the best is when someone is brave enough to ask for help. They send us their close up photos of their skin, including the blokes who add, ‘Lili, here are my pics without makeup on!’ … We love that everyone is able to join in our humour!!

Once their products arrive, they follow instructions on when and how to apply and any other advice given. When the note comes back to say ‘OMG I love your product, my skin feels amazing, my feet look better than ever before, the Rosacea/Eczema has calmed down, the Acne has vanished, the Menopause – what Menopause?’… This has been the best Testimonial and ultimate feel good story for us.

I recently met with a customer who took a risk when asking about my non-commercial products earlier this year. She tried it, changed her routines and saw an improvement over a very short period of time. She then moved on from the problem solving Magic Serum to the lush Frankincense Face Serum. She looks Absolutely Fabulous and for me, showed Customer Satisfaction at a wonderful level! This made us both feel happy to see how a little bit of change can make a massive difference to how one looks and feels!

With an overall holistic approach, we try to help our customers achieve the results they are looking for. We believe that a happy, stress-free, well-nourished and hydrated body reflects on the outside with clear skin, a fresh mind and a body that functions according to its purpose. One that is out of balance, stressed, not well-nourished is like a car that hasn’t had a regular oil change, which chugs along inefficiently. Please don’t get us wrong – we all have moments like this, where we are stressed and out of sync. Though finding the balance that works for us individually is what we try to achieve.

Pedicures & Super Dry Feet

Pedicures & Super Dry Feet

Have you ever just thought OMG my feet, what an embarrassing site for sore eyes?

Have you ever just thought OMG my feet, what an embarrassing site for sore eyes? Have you ever just watched TV and scratched your dry skin off without even realising what a horrible mess you’ve made on the floor, hoping that no-one notices whilst you get the vacuum cleaner to remove the evidence?

If you have said ‘Yes’ to these questions, then don’t feel bad – I was the same but probably worse.

I went for a pampering session to get my feet pedicured . I was embarrassed to be honest, thinking that the Beautician was going to see my awful, concrete feet as I referred to them.  They were really dry with cracked skin on my heels.

The gasp I was given when she sat down to start my feet was confirmation that they were pretty bad.   She said, ‘Liil, what happened to your feet?  In all my years doing pedicures, I have never seen such dry feet!

She took photographic evidence, which has conveniently disappeared…. to be honest, you wouldn’t want that kind of information flying around if you were running for the Presidency, right?  Ironically, I wish I had kept the picture to show you the before and after photos instead!

My Beautician puts on the face mask, takes out her electric foot filer and begins sanding my feet. I felt like I was in a ‘Mr Bean Movie’.  It was so embarrassing to say the least, needing so much work to find new skin underneathe.

My pedicure always took longer than normal as the Beautician needed more time to finish and paint my toe nails. Crazy huh?

A few months later, in making my Essentially Lili Products for people to try, I thought I would make something to help keep my feet nourished.  I experimented with a few different blends, trying always to keep it natural and easy to apply. The one that I loved the most was had Peppermint and was so delish to smell and felt even better on the skin.  My feet were hydrated, fresh, soft and smooth as they enjoyed the butters, oils and Essential Oils being applied every morning and night!

Peppermint Feet soon became a favourite product.  The home-spa treatment process was easy. The trick with this home pedicure was to gently remove any dry skin from the heels using a foot filer, not the ‘cheese grater’ type apparatus. Rinse off and pat dry both feet.  Using the back of my thumb nail to take approximately half a 1/2 a thumb nail of Peppermint Feet, apply the product to the heels, soles, toes and tops of the feet, gently massaging in the process.   If a little bit of product was used, I was able to put my shoes on without needing to wear socks.   Too much product would just take longer to absorb into the skin in which case, socks would be needed and perhaps a lie down for maximum chillax!

It’s been over a year since I needed to have this long embarrassing pedicure take place. Now I can have a home-spa treatment every day!!

At Essentially Lili, I have often changed a blend to suit others that would otherwise be excluded from using a product.  In the case of the Peppermint Feet which is a favourite, I wanted to make something which included Pregnant & Expecting women – we named it Tango Twinkle Toes.   I think it’s lovely being pampered and included whilst expecting the arrival of your little one(s)!

For those that have stubborn dry feet, I made Lime Foot Repair which contains beeswax and helped heal the cracks, repair the damaged heels, and make that skin new again! The Beeswax works like a barrier, keeping the moisture locked in under the surface!!

This means that everyone can enjoy their home-spa treatment and as there is a product suitable for all.

Something New

Something New

Making Infusions for the first time using Rosemary and Lavender flowers.

I thought I would try making Something New especially whilst the kids are at school. I love my interruption free Production Days as it allows me to concentrate and get into an Essential Oils zone!

Today was the day for my first attempt at making infusions using the Rosemary from my garden and Lavender flowers I had collected near our local allotments. The intention for the Rosemary infusion was to use the water for cleansing the skin, whilst the Lavender flowers for gifts or decorations.

After a few days, I would add a natural preservative to ensure they wouldn’t ferment.   I would see what it smells like, feels like and looks like once it had time to infuse.

Last year I made a oil/water based lotion that failed badly.  In the Evolution & Experiments blog, I wrote how my son climbed into the fridge and knocked the product to the floor: the oil went one way and the water part another. It created such a mess, but confirmed that my attempted blend had failed.

Today I wanted to overcome this epic fail and have another attempt at making a tiny batch of a creamy water & oil blend. I used Beeswax, some natural oil, purified water and borax together with a few Essential Oils to give the lotion other benefits.  The blend was creamy though I wasn’t sure it was the finish I was after. Thee is definitely room for improvement and adjustment with the next attempt at making the oil/water blend.

We are currently trialling the products to see how they feel on the skin, using it as a deodorant.  It hasn’t irritated my skin or made me feel stinky which are both very positive signs.

As it is All Natural, as per Our Brand – containing NO Chemicals or Unnatural Preservatives, it is safe enough to use on my kids as they get older and require a little deodorising which is another bonus!

I will keep you posted on how the improvements, scents and the name we give the product when we’re done!  They will be added to our Products List.

Evolution & Experiments

Evolution & Experiments

Essentially Lili has changed jar sizes, labels and logo since inception.
We are currently designing new labels which will be a combination of what have used before, only with the Essentially Lili Logo!

Evolution & Experiments

Evolution means development, progression, change and transformation.  They are a great way to describe the evolution of Essentially Lili.

When we started, everything was a process of making quick decisions. Our Jump in with Both Feet approach concerned the labels, our colour codes, information for the customer, designing the logo and building the brand.

There will always be someone who does not understand what we like; nor will they comprehend what’s within our heart and drives us forwards. Colour schemes for example, is a personal preference. We have had humorous and frustrating times making labels from Essentially Lili’s inception.

We tried all sorts of templates, fonts and had some printer malfunctions too. The worst was the classic ‘We have no ink left in the cartridges after printing a few sheets’! This is when we gave all Essentially Lili products their own colour code.

The labels process is still evolving and improving. We hope to change the design to incorporate all the things we loved about the Evolution process. They will be printed professionally so that we can up-grade Our Brand to the next level.

One thing we didn’t want to do was hastily run to the finish line. We felt so much was important to learn and know beforehand, as we aimed for a little perfection and ultimate customer satisfaction.

Regarding the Evolution of Products, there is always space for improvement after making the batch.  When we make the batch, we check to see how the product sets, then how the balm or serum feels on the skin and combine this with the Customer’s feedback.

Sometimes, the products made don’t even make it passed the blending phase or the setting stages when the feedback is ready!

One time, we were making the Mint Body Butter in a whipped cream formation.  The smell of Peppermint was so delish that we had to keep reminding ourselves it was not for internal consumption!   The door-bell rang when our child arrived home from school. We leaned the whisk to the side of the mixing bowl as we buzzed the door open, when we heard the massive CRASH!

The bowl of liquid balm mixed with peppermint fell and was all over the stove, leaving a fraction of the product for us to save!   Urgh the horror, the clean-up, the butter and oil that needed to be collected, and that delightful smell which we were unable to put on our bodies.  Lesson learned … take the whisk out or don’t answer the door!!

Another time, we were experimenting with making an oil and water based lotion for the first time.  We put the blend into a container to set it in the fridge.  A few days later, our son decided he wanted something from the fridge and climbed in reaching for the top shelf where the container was located.  It flew right over the top of him and crashed onto the floor!!!

The water content went one way whilst the oil base went the other!  What a crazy sticky watery mess… though he did provide the feedback about the product which hadn’t worked out!

Sometimes, the product concoction is great for those that use it, whilst the chronic suffers finds the blend not strong enough. Other times, the mix of Essential oils is so spot on that the intended results occur after a few weeks of usage and helps the customer gain their ‘life back’.  Refer to Testimonials.

Our main focus is being able to help people not suffer with aches and discomfort. We have to be open to receiving both the positive and negative feedback. This helps us to improve, change, transform, develop and ultimately Evolve Essentially Lili’s products for Customer satisfaction.

Jump In With Both Feet

Ramont, CH

Jump in with both feet

Taken at Romont in Switzerland of our kids expressing how we feel!!

When Essentially Lili was founded, it was pretty much a ‘Jump In With Both Feet’  kind of experience.

We were unsure of going ahead with this venture. We were afraid of failing, scared and worried that it would become such an overwhelming experience, that we would not cope as a result.

I contemplated becoming a consultant for a well-known established Brand as the safer option. But I knew I would be unable to promote products that I was unwilling to use on my own face due to what I suffered in my youth.

I remember feeling somewhat overwhelmed as my brain processed the negative thought process of, ‘What if I can’t? What if I fail? What if no one likes what I do?’ It is so easy to remain in a negative mind-set and so much harder to pull yourself out with your head held high as you plan to ‘Jump in with Both Feet’!

To help overcome my uncertainty, I went to see what other women and mums were doing in Zurich. These Mums are inspirational to say the least, as they juggle their often very young families, commitments and businesses to be a success!   They make, create, sell, inspire, share, help, promote, build each-other up and encourage other Women to do the same.

I said to myself … ‘Well why not?  If I don’t try, I will never know and might regret this for the rest of my life.

What if they LOVE the Brand, our All Natural, Homemade Cosmetics, No Chemicals or Unnatural Preservatives Products?  Wouldn’t it be better for people to use the Essentially Lili Products and share via Word of Mouth their love for it to others?

Excited about the prospect of helping others, the name Essentially Lili came to life by bringing together the use of Essential Oils and my name Lili.

Two days later, with a bag of sample containers obtained from our local Drogerie, we cleared the kitchen and began making a batch of Nourishing Face Balm to give out to people. We went to Zurich and handed out Essentially Lili samples with a note about the ingredients contained, details about Essentially Lili and how to contact us for more information.

We waited… and waited… and waited for Feedback.   This was the hardest part, waiting and then collating feedback.

Our first client’s face to face feedback (which can be found in Testimonials had me in tears of joy, as I listened to her story and how the Essentially Lili product had helped her in such a short space of time.

Since then, we have been asked to make so many other products that are now in the Essentially Lili Range.  There is feedback about the various products in the Testimonials part of the website which we hope you will enjoy reading.

It has been a roller-coaster journey so far, with mixed emotions of joy and frustration. We have had to juggle the time around our young family and studies. We have been building the brand and reputation, whilst creating and blending products.  The amazing stories shared by people makes this journey all worth it.
