The shocking news about known brand sunscreens, the ingredients which can bring more harm than good whilst ‘protecting’ your skin.And this is what makes buying sunscreen can be so hard to buy. What do you look for when choosing the sun protection for you and your family? Do you go for what’s familiar, a popular brand, something you heard or recommended? It can be so difficult, almost as bad as asking your kids to choose only one type of sweet in the candy store!! There are so many colourful options, funky names, and functionality which makes selecting even harder than choosing based on the SP Factor.

I recently posted a pic of my Sun Kissed Balm which was originally made for a fair skinned friend of mine who was bothered by the sunspots discolouration that appeared on her face after holidaying in Spain. Apparently, she hadn’t applied sunblock or sunscreen to her face causing different tones to appear which didn’t make her happy.

Of course, when I take on the challenge to make a new product, I do my research about what I’m trying to achieve. For me, choosing the ingredients based on their benefits and the overall outcome is most important before I create the small sample batch. It’s necessary to note that some ingredients are best used at night time only, as they can make your skin super sensitive when exposed to the sun,

In the last blog I wrote Getting Ready for Summer I explained how it’s not only wise but crucial to ensure your skin is protected before going outside and being subjected to the sun’s UV Rays. When growing up in Australia, the advertising campaigns were all about that gorgeous golden tan which made one appear healthy.This was before we knew better about the sun’s harmful rays, the Ozone layer and skin cancer. Today, the children in Aussie schools are not allowed to enter the playground unless they’re wearing a hat and sunscreen.It’s where the slogan ‘Slip Slop and Slap’ came from – Slip on a T-Shirt, Slop on some sunscreen and Slap on a hat.

Sometimes we forget to apply, can’t be bothered, or just don’t put enough sunscreen to protect ourselves. The risks of the skin burning and developing other complicated issues increase for those with lighter tone or less melanin. Despite my being of Sicilian background with an olive complexion, my normally non-tanned skin becomes extremely golden brown with blonde, whilst our kids, with their Italian and North Indian blend, obtain a rich gorgeous colour in the summertime. (If only I scored the tall genes as they did from their dad!) Irrespective of our natural genetic skin tone, we still apply sun protection before heading out to prevent burning, damaging or accelerating the aging of our skin.

Moderate doses of naturally sourced Vitamin D from the sunshine are beneficial for our overall health. Standing under sunlight for 5 to 30 minutes at least twice a week should be sufficient to naturally get what’s needed. And only 10 minutes of sunshine will help your body produce approximately 10,000 units of natural Vitamin D.

The other option is to eat foods that are rich in Vitamin D. The benefits of Vitamin D include boosting your brain’s health, keeping your bones strong, improving the function of your immune system, and assisting with managing weight. Foods that are rich in Vitamin D include:
From Fish: Cod Liver Oil, Wild Salmon, Tuna Fish, Sardines and Mackerel;
• Fortified Cereal and Milk;
• Mushrooms;
• Eggs;
• For the brave, Beef Liver and Caviar.

Note: Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to other serious conditions, like depression, heart disease, certain cancers, osteoporosis, and autoimmune concerns.

We need to make sure we’re not over-exposing ourselves to the sun and therefore preventing ourselves from burning red raw like a lobster. This can increase our risks of skin cancer (Melanoma) , which can happen to anyone.It’s necessary to be aware of what’s happening to your skin, preventing sun damage and excessive burning. Did you know that some of the ingredients contained in sunscreens can actually encourage skin cancer?

The Environmental Working Group (EWG)’s recent 2019 Sunscreen report showed that almost 2 out of 3 sunscreens bought in the USA contained worrying ingredients that are easily absorbed by the body. Within a day or so of using these particular sunscreens, high levels of the chemicals contained can be traced in the bloodstream. Approximately half of the sunscreens sold in the USA not only contain these harmful ingredients, but don’t work at all, or fail to provide protection from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. This same 50 % of sunscreens sold in the USA with insufficient UVA ray protection would NOT be allowed in Europe.This means that 3 times more UVA rays are being transferred through the skin in comparison to the brands that are available in Europe.

Why does this matter? The damage your skin endures with UVA rays is invisible whilst aging and suppressing the immune system. Over-exposure increases the risk of developing various forms of melanoma and carcinoma (which is a malignant tumour or cancer which begins in the lining of the internal organs or skin tissue.) Despite our skin protection, these SP Factor products are still allowing us to be exposed to large amounts of UVA.

Choosing a ‘perfect sunscreen’ will be extremely difficult as many contain harmful ingredients, nanoparticles which can pass through the blood but also damage life in the waters (lakes/sea). Usually a product like soap is washed off soon after its application, but sunscreen is absorbed and reapplied throughout the day, remaining on the skin for a long time. Some US brands have ingredients like Oxybenzone which is known as an endocrine disruptor and acts like an Oestrogen in the body. This has been linked to conditions like endometriosis in women or abnormal sperm functionality in men . This same ingredient can affect coral reefs, which the Hawaiian state took the opportunity to ban oxybenzone in sunscreens to protect their sea-life. Others like Retinyl palmitate, a type of Vitamin A can not only affect the skin but could lead to skin cancers.

The last 12 years have seen an increase in mineral sunscreens that according to the EWG are rated safer and block UVA rays better than those sunscreens with chemicals. Therefore, choosing safer sunscreens together with prevention, covering yourself with a hat and T-Shirt, and enjoying the shade are also methods to prevent being over-exposed to the sun.

In summary, some of the crazy sunscreen ingredient risks are:
•They are loaded with Hormones like Oxybenzone;
• They can cause allergic reactions
• Vitamin A which should be avoided includes Retinol or Retinyl Palmitate/Acetate/Linoleate as these can affect our hair’s growth, the liver, cause our nails to become brittle, osteoporosis or hip fractures for older adults;
• The higher the SP Factor doesn’t necessarily mean there’s more protection from being burnt by UV rays;
• The Sprays can be inhaled, or areas missed when trying to cover the skin.

Should your skin develop any kinds of sun spots that are aggressive in their appearance, get them checked out by a Doctor as soon as possible. Whilst prevention is best, early detection and medical attention can speed up the healing and recovery process. Please don’t ever just look at holistic alternatives but rather seek professional expert advice first.

Remember to also stay hydrated, switch your outing experience around by moving to the shade for cooling off. This will give your whole being a break from too much sunshine and heat.

Intervista a Lili Giglia, fondatrice di ESSENTIALLY LILI

Lili vive in Svizzera dal 2012, da quando il marito è riuscito a finalmente a convincerla che la vita in Svizzera sarebbe stata perfetta per una giovane famiglia come la loro, ha così lasciato il lavoro nel Regno Unito e con la figlia ha raggiunto il marito a Zurigo.

Analista finanziaria di grande successo, dopo aver lavorato per grandi aziende per quasi due decenni, non avrebbe mai immaginato che la sua nuova vita tra le montagne, l’aria pura e le bellezze naturali svizzere sarebbe stata l’inizio di una nuova libertà. Originaria dell’Australia, carismatica e attenta, Lili ha dovuto trovare una soluzione per mettere a frutto la sua creatività e il suo spirito imprenditoriale pur rimanendo la “regina della casa”. Questa è la sua storia, la storia di un vasetto di magia!

Come mai sei venuta a vivere in Svizzera?

Nel 1990 mi sono laureata in Economia e dai venti ai trent’anni ho lavorato per una società petrolifera in vari settori. I miei compiti riguardavano principalmente l’analisi delle finanze e delle prestazioni, oltre a un accurato servizio clienti.

Quando vivevo nel Regno Unito, ho incontrato mio marito e insieme abbiamo iniziato a pianificare il nostro trasferimento in funzione del suo posto di lavoro. Dopo il matrimonio, nel 2004, ci siamo trasferiti a Dubai, dove sono entrata in una società di logistica. È stato bello vivere a Dubai, proprio nel periodo in cui le idee e i progetti per le Palms stavano prendendo forma.

Ci siamo poi trasferiti per un breve periodo a Basilea, in Svizzera, prima che mi offrissero nuovamente un ruolo di analista contabile per un’azienda di spedizioni con sede a Sunbury on Thames (Regno Unito), dove siamo rimasti per quasi 2 anni. Successivamente, siamo tornati a Melbourne con l’intento di vivere lì dopo aver avuto la nostra prima figlia, poiché in quel periodo volevo il supporto della mia famiglia. Tuttavia, mio marito voleva tornare nel Regno Unito, siamo quindi partiti nel 2007 con nostra figlia di 9 mesi, circa 3 giorni dopo il matrimonio di mia sorella. Nel Regno Unito, sono tornata a lavorare a tempo pieno e abbiamo anche iniziato a rinnovare casa e creare il nostro giardino.

Il nostro secondo figlio è nato nel 2010 e ho vissuto per 5 anni nel Regno Unito con i bambini. Mio marito si era temporaneamente trasferito a Zurigo per un progetto di 3 anni, tornando a casa ogni due settimane, e per me è stato abbastanza impegnativo lavorare a tempo pieno e crescere 2 bambini piccoli senza alcun sostegno familiare.

Qual è stata l’ispirazione originale dietro Essentially Lili?

L’ispirazione per l’inizio della mia attività deriva dalla mia esperienza, in quanto ho sofferto di eczema dall’età di 9 anni. Mio padre mi aveva fatto visitare dai migliori dermatologi di Melbourne, per trovare la giusta dose di cortisone che tenesse sotto controllo i problemi della mia pelle. Ricordo la mia frustrazione quando, dopo 10 anni di visite specialistiche, dissi a mio padre che non sarei più andata! Mi sentivo come una cavia, i medici scattavano foto delle mie mani e della mia pelle, provando a immaginare gli effetti delle cure.

Durante l’adolescenza, ho preso diversi antibiotici e il farmaco Roaccutane, per poi avere un peggioramento. Dopo diversi mesi di utilizzo, ho avuto una grave reazione che mi ha causato gonfiore, prurito, lacrimazione, sanguinamento e un forte eczema dalla testa ai piedi. Il mio corpo era completamente infiammato dagli antibiotici, che mi avevano causato ulteriori problemi. Ho addirittura smesso di frequentare l’università per due mesi a causa dello stato in cui mi trovavo, ho pianto tantissimo per il dolore e da lì ho iniziato la mia ricerca personale per trovare un’altra soluzione. Quando mi sono ripresa un po’, sono tornata per completare la mia laurea in Economia nel 1990.

Chi soffre di malattie della pelle come l’eczema può diventare paranoico, pensando che le persone guardino, critichino e giudichino il loro aspetto. Mi è successo da bambina, e sono stata spesso isolata o esclusa, senza amici. Credevo che gli altri ragazzi non avessero mai visto prima una cosa del genere e mi ritenessero contagiosa. Perdere la fiducia in me stessa mi ha fatto interiorizzare e nascondere i miei sentimenti, e sono diventata silenziosa e timida, mentre mi nascondevo dietro il trucco e i capelli lunghi. È stato un periodo orribile della mia giovinezza, e capisco perfettamente l’angoscia emotiva di chi soffre di acne, psoriasi, rosacea o eczema.

Cosa ti ha portato infine a iniziare la tua attività?

Non c’è niente di male nell’essere casalinga e prendersi cura dei propri figli, ma quello che mi mancava di più era l’indipendenza economica. Avevo lavorato e viaggiato per oltre 17 anni prima di arrivare in Svizzera. Per me, che non ero abituata a stare in casa, era davvero difficile abituarmi a una vita da casalinga, soprattutto con la mia esperienza lavorativa.

Mentre pensavo a “cosa fare nella mia nuova vita a Zurigo”, avevo preso in considerazione l’idea di diventare rappresentante di un marchio, vendendo prodotti per la cura della pelle. Ma c’era per me un palese “conflitto di interessi”, non sarei mai riuscita ad essere disonesta con me stessa o con i clienti, vendendo prodotti che personalmente non avrei mai utilizzato.

A quel tempo avevo già trovato delle soluzioni per avere una pelle dall’aspetto sano, per cui ho iniziato a pensare di condividerla con gli altri. Molti possono usare senza problemi prodotti acquistati al supermercato o in farmacia, tuttavia ci sono anche molte persone come me, con una pelle estremamente reattiva agli ingredienti di origine non naturale contenuti in questi prodotti, che gliene rendono impossibile l’uso.

A marzo del 2015, ho partecipato alla Women’s Expo di Zurigo e ho potuto così trarre ispirazione, fare indagini e raccogliere informazioni. Una settimana dopo ho deciso di abbandonare l’idea di lavorare per un altro brand e di creare il mio marchio personale; che avrebbe contenuto solo ingredienti naturali al 100%. Producevo la mia crema viso da anni ormai, la mia pelle era nutrita e non soffrivo più di eczema.

Ho quindi creato un campioncino di questo prodotto e ho distribuito i prodotti a un gruppo di donne, con dei foglietti informativi fatti a mano e il mio biglietto da visita, quindi ho atteso pazientemente di sapere cosa ne pensassero.

Circa un mese dopo, una signora che soffriva di rosacea da anni mi ha mandato un messaggio e ha chiesto di incontrarmi, dicendomi “Come posso fare per avere ancora un po’ di quel vasetto di magia?” Mi ha raccontato la sua storia, di quanti soldi avesse speso comprando diversi tipi di cosmetici, sia commerciali che farmaceutici, per cercare di risolvere i suoi problemi di pelle. Niente sembrava funzionare finché non ha provato il mio balsamo viso nutriente.

Aveva usato il mio campioncino e voleva averne ancora, poiché per la prima volta dopo tanti anni un prodotto era riuscito a lenire quel rossore secco e pruriginoso che nascondeva sotto il trucco. Ecco un’altra donna come me, che nascondeva il viso sotto uno spesso strato di trucco, cercando una soluzione in prodotti che peggioravano lo stato della sua pelle. Mi ha raccontato che da anni aveva l’abitudine di alzarsi alle 5 del mattino per iniziare la sua routine di trucco e poter così nascondere il viso coperto di rosacea.

Ora con il mio prodotto, poteva usare meno trucco. Io ho deciso di smettere del tutto di usare fondotinta, applicando solo i miei prodotti per la cura della pelle, e non l’ho più usato dal 2015! Ho buttato tutti i trucchi di marchi commerciali, fondotinta, rossetti, alcuni mai aperti ma scaduti, tutti contenenti parabeni. Valevano un sacco di soldi, ma la mia pelle stava molto meglio senza.

Ho capito che questo sarebbe stato il mio nuovo percorso, una ricerca per aiutare gli altri a sentirsi sicuri di sé e della propria bellezza, e a prendersi cura di se in modo olistico.

Getting Ready for Summer

The weather is changing and the sun will be coming out. Are you ready?

What happened to the beginning of the year? One minute we’re putting our winter woollies on and watching the snow fall, the next, the blossoms have come and gone and April is almost finished. It’s taken me a while to get organised with ordering my next batch of Sunblocks for the summer. But finding the right ones for me came from trial and error as far back as I can remember.

Growing up in Australia, I spent a lot of my days outside or at the beach jet-skiing with my siblings and friends. I remember the first time we went jet-skiing, we ached so much from doing it all wrong that we couldn’t move at the end of the day. We laughed so much and had such a great time.

In Australia, the sun is so strong that it’s recommended to ‘Slip Slop and Slap’ protection all the time.Applying sunscreen to my face was always a risk for me. I tried using cricketers’ zinc but found it so harsh on my face. It became so hard that I could only remove it by scrubbing my already sensitive skin. If I used creamy sunscreens, my face would become clogged and prone to breaking out in Acne. Urgh, the dread for me trying to protect my skin without causing other problems.

For quite some time, I found sunblock that is thicker in size than a regular lip balm which is easy to apply and suits my skin just right.Look for those with SPF Factor 30+. I apply mine before going out in the sunshine. Gently massage the sunblock it your skin, particularly around the eyes, nose and face. To slow down the aging process, avoid roasting your face directly under the sun.

If you’re sharing sunblock with your immediate family, wipe the top off beforehand. This will prevent anything from one’s face being passed to yours. I don’t usually allow anyone else to use my sunblock.

Wear a hat to shade your face, or a shirt/ T-shirt whilst walking around to prevent unnecessary burning and sun damage. When the clouds are out but the weather is muggy, be aware that you can still get burnt from the UV Rays of the sun. We don’t even realise how hot the sun until after our skin is stinging, red or covered in discoloured sunspots. Of course, you could style it up like Audrey Hepburn and Sophie Loren with a classy headscarf and huge sunglasses too!

Keep yourself hydrated, preferably with water. Whilst we’re out in the sunshine swimming in the beach, lake, pool or river, we are refreshed and cooled down. When we get out to dry off, the sun draws not only the water from the surface of our skin, but that which is within. It’s important to remain hydrated, with water, fruits and other refreshing options available during the summer.

After sun care is extremely important too.We often forget about taking care of our skin should be part of our daily life, as it’s the only one we’re going to get. Once we’re returned from enjoying the summer weather, beach and scenery, we start the whole age appropriate after care routine.This will ensure the skin is replenished from being outside. It will also keep that glowing tan healthy looking too. Re-hydrating the skin is just as important as drinking water.

What we use on holidays or during the summer:
• For the Kids, we use the Natural Baby Moisturising Oil which is easy to apply and gentle enough from their faces to their feet.
• Dad uses the Hydrating Face Balm as it smells of Sandalwood and keeps his skin feeling wonderful soft.
• For me, it’s a combination of products starting with my cleansing to ensure that the sunblock has been removed. Choose from either the Cypress Cleansing Balm which is made with Beeswax, Butters and Essential Oils or the Oil based Sunflower Cleanser
• Then I use the Frankincense Face Serum with the Nourishing Face Balm to hydrate and protect my skin.
• Depending on what we bring with us, we apply either the Jazz Body Butter , the Geranium Hands & Body or the Mint Body Butter on our shoulders, arms, tummy and legs.Either one is gorgeous with its natural scent and feels lush as it melts into the skin and keeps it hydrated for such a long time.
• And don’t forget your feet especially if you’re planning to wear open shoes or sling-backs!! Peppermint Feet keeps those heels soft and helps prevent fungal infections and smelly feet. But if you’re expecting or nursing, use the Tango Twinkle Toes or the Lime Foot Repair instead.

But don’t despair if you have damaged your skin already. I made the Sun Kissed Balm to assist with sunspots and discolouration caused by the sun. This product can only be used at night time to prevent your skin becoming more sensitive to the sun.

– The kind of foods we should consume to help Autoimmune issues

In the last blog we shared about ‘Autoimmune issues’ as there’s been a lot of talk regarding what it means to you. Please note that you should get yourself diagnosed by a Doctor or Nutritional Expert as the scientific evidence is constantly evolving.

Start with getting additional help – if you need to get certain tests done, whether they are blood or excrement tests, have them done by the right specialists. This will allow the doctors and specialists to check for various imbalances. Whilst autoimmune issues can be quite disheartening and stressful, you can start by changing your diet and making notes about how you feel after eating certain foods. If you have any of these common symptoms, hopefully they are not that serious and will go away with time. However,if they are persistent, please get yourself checked out.You might think that leaky gut only affects the digestive system, but the truth is, it can affect the body is so many other ways.

The main organs, tissues that are affected by autoimmune issues are:

Skin – with symptoms like Rashes, red bumps on facial skin or red flaking skin.Other skin concerns are Acne, Rosacea, Eczema, Psoriasis, Dermatitis;

Digestive tract upsets – Stomach cramps, Gas or bloated stomach, Diarrhea or constipation, may indicate irritable bowel disease;

Brain – Anxiety, Stress, Headaches, Brain Fog, Fatigue or hyperactivity, feeling weird, tired or even exhausted;

Red blood & blood vessels;

The Glands – affecting organs like the Pancreas for Type 1 Diabetes; the Thyroid, where underactivity causes Hashimoto’s disease or overactivity causes Graves’ disease. These activities usually result in Weight loss or gains;

Connective Tissue – with conditions like Multiple Sclerosis and Lupus;

Muscles & Joints – with symptoms like Rheumatoid arthritis or fibromyalgia symptoms, giving pain, weakness, stiffness or other discomfort;

So what’s eating dirty about? To support a healthy gut and encourage immune system response, we need to ensure our body has the right organisms.Our body needs a daily dose of elements, minerals and nutrients to regenerate cells and function well.These include oxygen, iron, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus and more, in addition to the water we should consume.

When we have foods that are rich in Soil Based Organisms (SBOs), these plants are grown in environments where the soil is rich and containing high active microorganisms. The organisms should protect the plants from becoming contaminated or undernourished.Have you ever seen giant healthy vegies grown in someone’s loving backyard or allotment?

Scientific literature often references soil-based organisms. Foods that are healthy, rich in nutrients, elements, amino acids, vitamins and calcium can assist with how one deals and treats certain health conditions. Disclaimer:This is by no means an instruction for readers to stop seeking medical advice or to stop taking medication prescribed by doctors.

For example, when my Grandparents and parents were young and growing up in Italy, they hardly ever had any kind of skin conditions.Their base ingredients were grown in the garden without pesticides, the butchers and farmers were using real feed for their animals, and the foods were made at home with love.(This doesn’t mean they didn’t have other health issues growing up, though most of these have been treated with modern medicine.)Before refrigerators, foods were often buried in the ground or maintained in a dirt cellar. The microbes in the soil helped preserve the foods whilst the lower temperatures kept bacteria away.

We used to play in the dirt, in vegetable and flower gardens, touching feeling and enjoying the earth between our finger.Instead, we are more obsessed with over Sanatising and killing any kind of bacteria – Note, it is necessary after using bathrooms and before eating! The introduction of fast foods, processed ingredients, abundance of sugars, salts and E numbers have seen a new generation of health concerns from weight gain, skin issues, and more.

If you were to do an experiment to see if there’s a difference in your health status, it would involve increasing the intake of foods that are high in soil-based organisms and maintaining a healthy balanced diet. For example, if you had conditions like allergies, irritable bowel syndrome, flatulence, indigestion, autoimmune & inflammatory diseases, fungal infections and nutrients deficiencies, see what happens if you changed your overall diet for a while.

Soil-based organisms will help nourish the cells in the colon and liver and allow for the creation of compounds like Vitamins B, K2, antioxidants and enzymes .They will also help balance the immune system, reducing inflammation as well as fight off harmful bacteria like Candida, fungi and parasites which could block or damage the lining in the gut.

How to start eating dirty:
• Start by not sanitising your foods.
Wash your vegies that you buy fresh with running water, but don’t scrub them with brushes and produce washes. The carrots will contain beneficial microbes and some 500 milligrams of dirt, which is about the size of an average supplement capsule.

Include Probiotic Foods to your diet like Kefir, Yoghurt, Sauerkraut (which is cabbage cut fine, salted, and allowed to ferment until sour). The pasteurising process destroys microorganisms that are not desired by applying heat to control the rate at which fermentation takes place.This process is applied to drinks such as milk, wine, beer, cider as well as to foods such as cheese and crab meat.Destroying the enzymes could be why many of us have developed an intolerance to lactose. Kefir could assist with improving digestion or malabsorption of lactose.

Raw Honey & Bee Pollen consumption has helped many with seasonal allergies, hay fever and inflammation. A good friend of mine has been taking & administering to her family 2 teaspoons of honey every day to prevent allergies.The natural immunisation of the microbes contained in the honey and pollen become part of your gut, nourishing any gut bugs as it allows you to adjust to the seasons and environment.I will have to start this with my husband!

Incorporate and Live Life Outside – Swim in the ocean or lakes, play in the parks and gardens, get yourself grounded. Get a dog (if you are not scared of them like me!) take your shoes off and walk on the grass and feel the earth between your toes for a dose of ‘microbes’.Remember the film, ‘Pretty Woman’ when she says, “Let’s Cop a Squat and take a day off’ as she took his shoes off to touch the grass!

Eat Dirt Apparently the best dirt-based supplement is ‘Shilajit (shee-lay-jit) which comes from the bordering Indian & Tibet regions of the dense, nutrient and mineral rich soils of the Himalayan mountains. This supplement contains over 85 minerals, humic and fulvic acid which help the body to carry minerals through the thick cell walls and assists the longevity of the cell’s life. It is often used by the agricultural industry as a soil supplement.

So whilst we try to eat a healthier balanced diet, including foods that have high active microorganisms will assist our bodies to repair internally.They will help regulate the immune system, reduce inflammation of the gut naturally as the walls are strengthen and protected.And as we start to enjoy life outside, back to our roots, consuming foods as they were intended to be eaten.Ideally, removing foods that can cause damage to the gut is necessary. Begin a new page – seek alternative methods if you don’t want to take medications as there are plenty of new options.Whether these options are through the Nutritionist, Specialist, Acupressure, Reflexology, Herbal teas & medicines, Homeopathy pills as well as Conventional medication.Your goal should be to find a solution that gives you well-being to your Mind, Body & Spirit a Holistic balance of all these.

Do You Have an Autoimmune problem?

Do you have Autoimmune issues or suffer with leaky gut syndrome? What are the signs that you could be developing these problems?

Do You Have an ‘autoimmune problem’? There’s been a lot of talk lately regarding ‘autoimmune’ problems and what it’s all about. What does it mean to you?

Normally, the body should be able to fight against anything foreign that threatens the well-being or health of tissues and cells. This is regarded as the immune response which protects the body from harm. Autoimmune disease is when the body fails to differentiate between what is ok for the body and part of ‘self’ and what is not ok for the body and ‘non-self’.

The result of an autoimmune disease is that the body becomes in danger of being overcome by invaders, oxidants or diseases which it would otherwise fight against.  It can destroy body tissues and cells, affecting and changing the functionality of the organs. There is also a higher risk of getting bacterial infections when the autoimmune system is weak.  Did you know that 70% of your immune system is found in your ‘GALT’ – gut associated lymphoid tissues?

Your digestive system can become rather sluggish, clogged and unable to process what has been consumed without requiring additional assistance. What your body once considered ‘good foods’ is no longer recognised, where these become difficult to eliminate without other issues coming to the surface.

Autoimmune disease symptoms can often go undetected for a long time, where the conditions like leaky gut syndrome develop without one realising anything is wrong.  (Note: Leaky Gut syndrome has been given the medical term – “Intestinal Permeability”)

Diagnosing the conditions can also be just as frustrating.  Sometimes the process for receiving an official autoimmune diagnosis can take years of going to various doctors for different types of tests.Often these tests will only touch the surface of what the culprit might be because the symptoms of these Autoimmune conditions can be so vague and contrasting.What do you look for when trying to figure out if you’re suffering with autoimmune disease symptoms?

Medical journals ‘British Medical Journal and International Journal of Gastroenterology’ ‘ have both suggested that problems with a Leaky Gut are causing a vast number of autoimmune diseases. These include conditions like ‘lupus, allergies, depression, eczema, psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis amongst others. The rate of chronic health conditions rose in children by nearly 15% between 1994 and 2006 according to the Journal of American Medical Association , where conditions like obesity, asthma, learning and behavioural problems had the largest growth during that time. Based on blood tests performed, it seems that youngsters are also five times more likely to have celiac disease symptoms as compared to their peers from the 1950s.

Normally, the gut would have lots of good bacteria like ‘Bacteroides fragilis’ which helps the immune system stay in balance like a referee would. Its function together with the ‘microbiome’is to keep the pro vs anti-inflammatory functions in order, restoring it when it goes off kilter. Testing and research have found the bacteria has become endangered, and therefore has not been functioning as it once did.  Whilst this is a scary concept, it also means that Medical teams are working to better understand what’s happening, and how to ultimately improve autoimmune conditions. It will help understand why some people get really ill whilst others suffer less. The aim is to improve the longevity of our health but it will require healing the gut first.

But rest assured, there are ways of finding out and putting order back into the current stressful situation. Start by being kind to yourself and accepting that something you’re having is no longer in agreement with your body.  This is hard to do, especially if you are not ready.  But once you accept that your body needs a change, it will be the beginning to finding the culprit of your well-being What can we do to help get to the bottom of this?

In summary, Intestinal Permeability or leaky gut syndrome begins with inflammation in the gut and intestines, where it progresses to eventually preventing nutrients being absorbed or the sufferer becomes sensitive to foods or chemicals eaten. The autoimmune disease syndrome can affect all parts of the body, including:
• Joints, muscles, adrenal glands, Digestive tract functionality, the brain, skin, mouth, lungs, sinus & thyroids.
• If you have concerns about autoimmune disorders, start by removing foods and factors that can damage the gut;
• Replace them with dirty foods, healing foods as well as taking specific supplements and probiotics to help re-balance the gut.
• And remember that autoimmune disorders and leaky gut syndrome are not a ‘one fix fits all’ scenario. 

• What works for one person and their family may not necessarily work for another.

after taking time out &
getting back on track.

Following on from the last blog about ‘Taking Time out’. Whilst recently being in Hospital recovering from the Hernia Operation, I had plenty of time to think, rest and study again. I don’t really have a high pain threshold which made my recovery seem to take longer than planned.

I remember waking up and feeling groggy and hearing numbers being called out in German. They were calling out my low blood pressure numbers, but I was too late to tell the staff it was normal for me!! They had already given me a shot of morphine!! The other painkillers were being fed by drip – gosh for someone who rarely takes even Ibuprofen for the occasional headache, this was mega.

Unable to move around, or change my positions freely, I felt quite restricted despite being in good spirits. You don’t even realise how much you need your stomach or core muscles until you are unable to use them. Coughing, laughing and sneezing were so difficult to do whilst I was bandaged and recovering. I’m glad to say that 2 weeks post operation, I seem to be back to normal, except I am not able to lift heavy items for a few more weeks. My kids are so happy as they look for any excuses not to help around anymore!! That’s so Not cool.

With the excuse that I couldn’t do much, I took the time complete my Reflexology case studies and submit my final exam. It was one of those courses that needed a lot of motivation to study, write and understand. I’m glad that I persevered and completed it. I’m happy to say that I received my Reflexology Diploma with Distinction to add to the other 5 completed courses.

Choosing my Diplomas in Aromatherapy, Clinical Nutrition, Stress Management, Holistic Skincare Products and Reflexology were so I could assist with a Holistic approach to well-being when trying to help my customers. The one currently being studied is Holistic Pain Management. There is so much to grasp – not only how the Mind, Body and Spirit work together, but how there are so many alternative health solutions too. It’s ironic that whilst I was in so much pain and discomfort, that I had to commence studying this subject. I look forward to helping my customers with alternative solutions instead of seeking drugs as the only option.

In my youth when I was unwell, I had the pleasure of trying all sorts of alternative options. I tried the Herbalist, Chinese Medicine person with the brutal massage techniques and suction cups, the Reflexology, the Acupuncturist as well as the Dermatologist. I believe all of these experiences helped me comprehend what they do and how they can assist in bringing about well-being. Sometimes we should try another avenue to see if it works for us. These other options helped me so much in my quest to find my own well-being, irrespective of whether or not they worked for me. It’s only when you have boiled and drank a cup full of ‘secret herbs and barks’ from the Chinese Medicine person that you will ever understand the benefits and the hideous tastes at the same time!

My tummy was so bloated from the medication that I stopped taking them altogether. Imagine what happens to your intestinal tract if you’re taking medications all the time? My elderly Italian neighbour gave me some dry figs and other fruits to help me. What also helped was increasing my water and herbal tea intake. I took Aloe Vera cleanser as well as make a Himalayan Sea Salt Water wash to drink. I tried not to use medicated options for helping my tummy as I wanted my Intestinal tract to flush out any build up or irritations caused by the medications as quickly as possible. This also helps keep your skin healthy and clear.

Then I taught my husband how to make an Italian Minestrone so that I could eat well without having to feel so ill. The recipe is below:

MINESTRONE: Cut all sorts of veggies into chunks including: Onion, carrots, cabbage, celery, mushrooms, spinach, long green beans cut smaller, potatoes for thickening the soup. You can also add peas and silver beat (or chard). Salt, pepper, Italian Herbs, veggie stock and cover them with water. Then add a can of chopped up tomatoes, season to taste again. Add a little sugar to remove the acidity of the tomatoes. Cook until soft, squash the potatoes down to thicken and eat!

For assisting the healing of my wounds, I mentioned in the last blog the benefits of Grapeseed Oil (Vitis vinifera) which comes from the seeds of grapes, a by-product of making wine. It contains Omega-3 fatty acids with the highest levels of Omega-6 Fatty Acids, compared to other Vegetable Oils. I made sure I had my Essentially Lili Products with me in hospital and at home. The one I have been applying to my wounds is Mint Body Butter whilst others have been using the Jazz Body Butter to prevent any scarring post operation. I look forward to hearing the progress updates from the other operation buddies.

Taking Time Out – Chillax, Relax & be kind to yourself, in order to get your health back on track.

I recently wrote about our wonderfully fun travels in Italy … we love going there and enjoying everything it has to offer. Great food, wonderful beaches, fun people and other adventurers making their way to Italy. What I dreaded the most was the consequences of my indulgent eating habits catching up to me.

And it did catch up, in a number of way. First with my weight, piling on a few too many kilos that made me feel uncomfortable and self-conscious. I would wear baggy clothes just to hide some of it.

It also irritated my skin, as the build-up of Dairy products in my system eventually comes out on my hands. They were irritated, swollen, cracked, itchy and bleeding. Has this happened to you?

I can never know how long it will take for my body to rid itself of the build-up of lactose in my system. But one thing it needs is time, persistence and patience.The irritations began in August and are still not 100% in October. That’s nearly 3 months of discipline.This just goes to show that there is never a quick overnight solution to long-term problems. Whilst I apply my products continuously throughout the day, the main factor that helps me resolve it is controlling my diet. I must ensure that it’s dairy-free to prevent Eczema become part of my life. Don’t get me wrong – I do enjoy some dairy products, I just should not eat them as they are not good for me and my body if I want to remain Eczema Free.

In June, I weighed myself and was not happy with what the scales showed. Since returning from holidays in August, I cut back without totally eliminating carbs from my diet. I removed the dairy products which I’m intolerant to anyways, in order to allow my body the time needed to heal and get my hands sorted out again. I asked my family to help out too, with tasks like washing up, as even hot water can cause my skin to become irritated. It’s so frustrating and yet time, persistence and patience is needed for me to get the results I want.

Today I am less bloated from changing what foods I have been eating. When weighing myself recently, I have lost 5.4 kilos which has allowed me to move down a notch on my belt. I am really pleased considering this is happened without doing gym type exercise. I still have a while to go to reach and remain in my ideal weight bracket.

The other thing is taking the advice from those that are older than us.Our 89-year-old neighbour recently passed away, leaving behind his wife of 61 years of marriage and 2 daughters. The years he suffered being unwell meant he spent a lot of time going back and forth between the hospital, the elderly people’s home and his own place. It caused a lot of anguish and stress for his wife, never knowing if he would be well enough to just stay home without any need for assistance. We talked about his health and the advice she gave me was, ‘Don’t leave things unfixed or too late if they need to be resolved. Get them sorted out whilst you can.’So it’s time for me to finally go and get myself sorted and take time out.

Diastasis Recti, an umbilical hernia is when your intestine or other tissues inside your abdominal cavity bulge through the weak spot around the belly button, leading to an alien looking “outie” belly button.In addition to protruding outward, the belly button area may also become swollen and a bit painful.

My hernia pops out like an alien hand especially if I have eaten too much.It was bothering me for a while now, and this year I have decided to get it sorted out. On the 24th October, I’ll be having this operation, removing that little alien and whatever else shouldn’t be there, whilst having the split muscle meshed back in. It will mean resting up for 10 days as I will be unable to lift or put too much emphasis on my core muscles. I could risk damaging the operation repair and having the muscle tear again. I will be able to just chillax, relax and allow my family here take care of me for a change. Though the down side is having to put all production of new products on hold for a while.

About the Diastasis Recti – which ironically can also be caused by doing lots of core exercises!
The most common can develop during the 2nd trimester, peak during the 3rd and remain after delivery. During the pregnancy, the hormones such as relaxin are released which can weaken the tissues of the abs. Whilst the belly is growing, the ab muscles are thinned and stretched, adding pressure to the whole abdominal region. Months after the birth of the child, the abdominal muscles can naturally come together a little, improving any diastasis recti, though it’s not always totally resolved.It’s even more common for those giving birth to twins or having multiple pregnancies where the initial hernia was already existing.

Diastasis recti isn’t a serious condition, nor particularly dangerous, but it makes sense to treat it before it gets bigger. It could lead to postural problems and other symptoms if left too long.Speak with your Doctor, Gynaecologist, or physical therapist especially if you have pain and discomfort in your abdominal area or back. Always get medical help if you see other signs of a hernia, have severe gastrointestinal issues, notice swelling around your abs that lasts more than several days. You should visit your primary doctor or even a general surgeon to have a CT scan if you have a true concern about having a hernia, since this may require a medical intervention.

Other factors for hernias include:
• Being Obese or gaining weight, especially around the belly area;
• Being over the age of 35;
• Having injuries. trauma or surgery to the abdominal area;
• Repetitive core exercises such as Pilates and stomach crunches could increase your risk;
• Exercises and sports that require you to arch your back and twist from side to side can also increase your risk.These include sports like Tennis, Golf, Gymnastics, Yoga, Biking, Weight-lifting and even swimming.
• Injecting the abdominal area with steroids can cause the muscles to weaken.
• Who would have thought that being naturally flexible can cause the connective tissues to stretch and thin out?

Other natural ways of preventing a hernia:
1. Do some physical therapy;
2. Make sure your exercises are specific for strengthening the core without further damaging the area;
3. Try to prevent adding abdominal pressure to the area – lifting, carrying;
4. Keeping a healthy weight; and
5. Treating hernias before they become bigger.

Recently, I was contacted by women & men of varying ages to help them with Rosacea.According to Wikipedia, ‘Rosacea is a long term skin condition which affects mainly the face.The effects are on the nose, cheeks, forehead and chin, usually showing redness, with pimples and swelling, that have small superficial dilated blood vessels.The cause of Rosacea is unknown, though the risk factors are believed to be linked with family history. The signs of Rosacea can get worse when exposed to heat or cold, exercise, sunlight, spicy foods, alcohol, psychological stress, or during menopause and with the use of steroid/cortisone creams.These steroid creams include metronidazole, doxycycline, tetracycline, brimonidine, ivermectin, isotretinoin.Sunscreen is recommended, though we should all be using sunblock for our skin, irrespectively.Often patients endure dermabrasion or laser surgery.’

When I have seen someone with Rosacea, it looks extremely irritated, dry and aggravated.Those from far who have contacted me have said this condition makes them feel like others are staring at them, or that it’s very hot and irritating, that the medicated products are not working, and extremely depressing, where the woman didn’t want to leave her home anymore.

I just want to encourage you that you are not alone.There have been others that suffered the same condition and have been able to find a solution.Part of it is being aware of what your body is telling you to avoid.More and more people are unable to eat the kinds of foods they ate in their younger years, whether it be simple things like Pepper, Chillies and spices.

A few tips:
• Don’t be afraid to control or give up certain foods whilst your body re-balances itself.
• Try to find alternatives to the things you loved having.
• Make sure you maintain a skincare routine that is as natural as possible.Often the products available are either suppress the conditions, or they are too harsh as they strip the necessary natural oils from our skin’s reserves.When this happens, your body will make more oils to replenish what has been lost, creating an ongoing cycle:We remove the oils, the body makes it again, we remove them and so on.
• Make sure you also drink plenty of water throughout the day.
• Be realistic about the results you are looking for.Normally I ask how long someone has had the condition – and for every year, you should give the skin 1 month to repair and re-balance.Whilst the results often happen quickly, the time taken to repair years of damage is usually much longer. The reality is that if you have had a long-term skin condition, it will need time to repair, recover and to give you that glow back

Testimonials for me is when someone shares their personal individual story of struggle, trials, falling, rising and reaching their goal. Whether it’s a combination of health & diet, studies and a higher purpose in life.

Often, someone comes to me privately on a direct message asking for help. Usually it’s skin related – Psoriasis, Eczema, Acne and dry skin.For me, who has had a history with dry irritated sensitive Eczema prone skin, these issues are something I can help with first hand. But sometimes the condition is something that I haven’t suffered or endured before. Therefore, providing help requires a little more time to research before coming up with a small batch of product for them to try out.

In 2016, I was asked to make a product for Sun Spots and Discolouration. I made both Sun Kissed Serum and Sun Kissed Balm for this condition, giving out samples to try out. Then I received this testimonial in message in Feb & April 2018:

After enjoying too much sun in Spain some time back, I got some really nasty brown blotches on my cheeks. Sometimes my products don’t work out the first time.I initially made What Crow’s Feet in 2016 for the Eyes, but then when one of my dedicated testers reacted, I stopped making it.Then I made the Cool Eyes when I found the glass jars.I love this tiny pot of Gold magic, but it’s not about what I think.It’s what my customers think.In August 2017, one suffering with Milia wrote this:

This story is by far the best result. When I was asked about 2nd degree burns, I was thinking about the products I make, the age of the child and what would be best for her skin. In Summary, if you want to make a change to your diet, start my reducing the saturated fats, sugars, carbs and processed foods.Eat more greens and salads as they are lighter to digest.

On the newsletter, I wrote about Carrot Seed Essential Oil. To make your own gentle scrub for your face, place these ingredients into a jar and scoop when needed.
• Add Honey which is great for healing the skin as it allows the skin to maintain moisture and keep it soft.
Coconut Oil which is antifungal and also helps moisturise the skin.
• Add the grounded Coffee to the scrub.It has antioxidants which help your skin, but also give the texture for gently scrubbing off skin cells that no longer need to be there!
• Add a few drops of Carrot Seed Oil to the mix, which is fabulous for all skin types, as well as boosting skin that has been sun-damaged.

Should Dieting Be Punishment? When you hear the words diet, do you automatically think of rabbit food and starvation?

When you hear the words diet, do you automatically think of rabbit food and starvation? In the past, I associated dieting with a total restriction of my food intake that it put me off wanting to do it at all. The idea of eating only iceberg lettuce and bland foods put me off doing a diet for any reason.

What if I suggested that if you wanted to lose weight successfully, you could eat almost everything…. Would you think I was nuts?The reality is there are plenty of fad diets that help you to lose weight very quickly, which makes you feel great at the time.But what happens when you start eating ‘normally again’?Is it not better to just eat better from the beginning and make the ‘diet a lifestyle change instead’?

Often people say to me that my products don’t work.But the reality is that they are unwilling to make a small change to their food intake in order to find what triggers their body’s reactions.It may not necessarily be the same intolerance to food as someone else, If you think about how long you have suffered a condition

Years ago, when I was covered from face to thighs in weeping and bleeding Eczema, I sought the help of a Naturopath with his Homeopathy medications to assist in finding my well-being.I was distraught from how hideous my skin had become, my appearance was heart breaking to look at, even for me.I remember my Naturopath saying I was the worst case he had ever seen – thanks! ☹

You can imagine my thought process as he told me we had to start a very strict diet.But my diet wasn’t about losing weight, even though it was the side effect for me. My strict diet was about detoxing my body from the excess steroids and medications I had been on for years to suppress the Eczema that had become toxic in my body.

My Italian diet was altered very quickly for detoxing to become a Vegan Vegetarian one. For one who has grown up eating the Mediterranean type foods of meats, cheeses, pastas, vegetables and fruits with espresso and wine, this was like a punch in the face for my Dad, the Chef, and I. We were both confused and somewhat horrified.He had been lovingly preparing our meals for years and in his mind, meant he had contributed to my being unwell.This was not the case – the toxic build up in my body had caused my reactions in the skin.

The first day and week are always the hardest.All you want to eat is the breads and pasta to fill your tummy.You want to drink the beverages that you were normally drinking instead of boring water with a dash of lemon – right?I didn’t starve myself, that is for sure. My day consisted of 6 meals a day, every 2nd one was a healthier snack.I had lots of veggies, lots of fruit, lots of salad all day. They had no dressings, no salt or pepper, sugars, breads or ingredients which could have irritated my gut furthermore.My Naturopath wanted to ensure that my body was cleared of toxins as soon as possible, whilst he took care of the homeopathy side of things.

During this time, even all-natural honey worked against me. I put a tiny amount on my tongue to taste and reacted so quickly that I was scratching my face and body in the time that I swallowed the honey.It was such an immediate and awful reaction that confirmed how sensitive my body had become during this time.

I ate healthy foods and I was satisfied after each meal.There was cabbage, carrots, potatoes, onions, broccoli, lettuce, cucumbers, leeks, lentils, beans, peas, bananas, melon, nectarines, apricots, apples, pears and so much more that I was able to eat.When I felt hungry, I had a piece of fruit for a snack or made a fruit-based smoothie.At home, the salad bowl was huge and full of goodness.The lentils were made without pasta for me so that I had less digestion issues.My parents really made this 4-week process so much easier for me.

By the end of the first week, my skin had become worse.More irritated, more red, itchy, inflamed, weeping and bleeding.I cried so much, feeling more isolated and hideous than when I had started.I bathed every day with my stocking full of bran and wished for the day when my skin would just be normal.I persisted with my eating regime and seeing my Naturopath who was controlling my blood pressure and progress.What I hadn’t noticed is that I had been losing weight in the process.

During the second week of this eating regime, my skin began to change colour.My body had started to calm down, so there was less itching and scratching during the nights.By the third week, I had more new skin, with less redness and irritations.By the fourth week, I was 14 kilos or 2 stones lighter and my skin was like a newborn baby.And now it was time to stop the detoxing as my blood pressure had become lower than normal. Please remember that detoxing and doing a diet with the assistance of a medically trained Doctor or Nutritionist for health reasons should be short and monitored.

My body had rid itself of the medical and food related toxins that had built up in my gut.My skin had cleared completely, with no evidence or scars on my body from what I had suffered.You would never think that I was the same person a few weeks later.There is NO pictures of me during this time – thank goodness for film in my days, where the idea of selfies was unheard of.

Once I started eating other foods again, I introduced them slowly.My Naturopath suggested it was ok to have a Cheat Day where you enjoy the foods you have removed from your diet – that is if they don’t have a negative effect on your health.For me, indulging in dairy free ice-cream and treats one day a week was no longer a problem, as the majority of the time, I was eating healthy.

I carried on with the Food Combination way of eating and found alternatives to what I had been eating growing up.I found during this process that my body was intolerant to dairy products.I had stopped drinking espresso with sugar, tea with milk and sugar, fizzy drinks and eating lots of highly saturated foods.I found it too heavy to eat meats at the same time as breads and pasta.I would choose to eat either meat or pasta with lots of salads and vegies.I no longer craved dairy milk chocolate or desserts, as well as the foods that messed up my system. My body was performing like a well-oiled machine, less sluggish, no longer irritated and not a sign of Eczema.

So dieting should not be a punishment for eating bad foods. Dieting should be part of a lifestyle change that allows you to function properly without carrying excess weights.Try to make sure you include a decent multivitamin and supplements where you feel you are not getting enough nutrients for your body.

This week, a friend of mine mentioned that he was going to do a new diet to lose some weight.We too have added excess weight over the winter months and during our pampering time off in Italy.We have also started to change our eating habits this week.I have introduced more salads and vegies with protein to our meals, less carbs as well as cutting down our portion sizes.We try to eat carbs only in the day/lunch time instead of night time.I am not starving myself but eating fruits as the snacks in between.With this slight change, I have already noticed feeling less bloated with movement on the scales.This adjustment in the daily way food is consumed is better than doing a type of diet that is unrealistic in the longer term.You could risk putting all the excess weight on again, and more.

In Summary, if you want to make a change to your diet, start my reducing the saturated fats, sugars, carbs and processed foods.Eat more greens and salads as they are lighter to digest.

If you are:
Not Gluten intolerant, try to reduce your carb intake to day time instead of dinner time, to allow your body to process it.You tend to be more active during the day than at night time.
Gluten intolernant, stay off the breads and pastas, and be aware that many sauces contain gluten.
Dairy intolerant, there are so many other options to choose from including Soya, Rice, Almond, Quorn, Tofu, Lactose Free and more.Be careful of other ingredients which have hidden lactose, including sauces, dried foods, and even some medications.
Vegan / Vegetarian, ensure you are getting enough protein from your pulses and lentils.
Diabetic, the low carb diet has worked for my friend who has suffered Type 1 most of her life.
Thyroid issues, your diet will be further restricted.
Iron deficiency, try to stay off having espresso or coffees straight after your meals as it can absorb the iron your body needs.You can get liquid iron from the health shop to add to your Orange juice for that extra boost.Ifound the liquid was easier to digest than the pill form.
Suffering with skin conditions like Eczema and Psoriasis, then finding your triggers and what doesn’t agree with your body is KEY to your personal long-term wellness. It could be gluten, dairy, sugars, spices, citrus and fish, to name a few, but not necessarily the same as another person suffering the same condition.
