Keratosis Pilaris Tips

For skin that suffers with bumps & dryness that can look & feel irritating.

Keratosis pilaris is often called ‘chicken skin’, which looks like many small, rough or red little bumps on the skin. It often appears on the upper arms, cheeks, buttocks and thighs, around the hair follicles. Normally dead skin cells flake off the skin. Whilst the cause of it is not totally understood, researchers believe that sometimes, the keratin formed around the hair follicles builds up or becomes twisted which causes the clogging the pores, resulting in the bumps. Keratosis pilaris is generally linked with other skin conditions like atopic dermatitis and eczema. It also tends to happen during childhood and adolescence, though whilst not always the case, it usually disappears by adulthood.

From Wikipedia, ‘Keratin’ is part of the fibrous structural protein family, otherwise known as ‘scleroproteins’ which is found in vertebrae. It’s responsible for making hair and nails, as well as our outer layer of skin. Keratin protects cells from becoming damaged or stressed, is extremely insoluble in organic solvents and water. It’s an essential building block for our skin, necessary for generating new cells.

Usually the condition can become worse during the winter months, as the skin tends to dry out more when the weather is less humid. Another factor seems to be the age of the person suffering, frequently appearing in childhood, reaching the peak during the adolescent years and vanishing by adulthood.

So what can we do to help treat the condition naturally? Here’s a few things we can add to our daily routine to help reduce the built-up keratin on the skin:

Dry Brush the Area – this technique can help remove the dead skin cells as well as unclog the pores. Gently and preferably on dry skin, you can use a natural bristle brush or loofa in sweeping movements, as though you were brushing long hair. The last thing you want to do is hard brushing to further irritate your skin’s condition. Once the dry brushing is done, wash yourself in the shower and ensure your skin is pat dried. Apply the moisturiser to your body to invigorate the newly brushed cells.

Exfoliate the area with Sea Salt – The key is always being gentle to the areas you are exfoliating to ensure you’re not further aggravating the skin. Sea Salt contains anti-inflammatory properties that help calm and soothes the skin, whilst removing the dead skin cells, encouraging moisture levels to be maintained. Pink Himalayan salt is also great for achieving this. Below I’ll share some additional homemade scrub and the previous blog of ideas that you can put together from home ingredients.

Mild instead of Harsh Soaps – Preferably made with natural and non-toxic ingredients.This will allow the sensitive affected area to be cleansed, preventing further irritation, redness, or build-up. Further suggestions will be added below.

Moisturising Your Skin – Using non-irritating skincare products which have beneficial ingredients that are anti-inflammatory, rich in vitamins, reduce redness, hydrate and soothe the skin is what you are looking for. The idea is to find a product that you can leave on your skin, containing ingredients like Avocado, Jojoba, Coconut which will give your skin this natural boost required to keep it feeling wonderfully soft rather than dry, rough or flaky.Suggestions for the body butters we make containing rich ingredients will be added below.

Humidifiers – can actually bring moisture back to your environment, especially during the cold winter months, when your skin feels its driest. This can be kept in the bedroom or the most central part of the living area to ensure the whole space has moisture. Other tips for keeping moisture will be added below.

Eating Foods that are Anti-Inflammatory – can help your body utilize the vitamins and minerals required for skin cell growth. Green leafy vegetables, colourful ingredients like carrots and beets, berries, salmon, and those rich in omega3 will all play their part. These anti-inflammatory ingredients provide antioxidants, encourage cells to repair, and reduce swelling too. Drinking water will also assist with flushing away toxins that may have built up in your system as well as keeping your body hydrated.

DIY Homemade Scrubs, Soaps, Body Butters, Vegetable Oils

A few suggestions to help improve your skin’s condition include making your own Homemade scrub combining:

Sea Salt, Raw Coarse Sugar & Olive Oil is quick and easy to mix together, great for removing any dead skin cells, especially from over washed hands;

Pink Himalayan Sea Salt and Raw Honey , which has natural skin-boosting nutrients, acids and feels wonderfully moisturising on the skin. Once made, apply in the shower to the area affected with Keratosis pilaris, gently rubbing into the skin.After approximately 15 minutes, rinse off with warm water;

Blend Pink Himalayan Sea Salt and Vegetable Oils together. Suggestions include either Coconut, Avocado or Jojoba oils. Apply these to the affected areas and the rest of your body as they have natural skin-boosting nutrients and acids which feel wonderfully moisturising on the skin. Please ensure the base is a Carrier oil especially if you are planning to add Lavender or Peppermint Essential Oils to the mix. Note: Peppermint Essential oil is not suitable for expecting/nursing women.

Using Vegetable Oils , like Avocado, Coconut, Jojoba Oil are extremely rich in Vitamins. They allow the skin to absorb the benefits, reduce redness, allowing the skin cells to regenerate whilst keeping it hydrated. Below are the Essentially Lili Products that can help keep your skin hydrated;

Refer to the previous blog: What’s in your fridge for more suggestions.

Essentially Lili Range of Body Butters containing ingredients rich in antioxidants:
The Jazz Body Butter contains Avocado, which is rich in Vitamins A, which can help reduce redness and encourage skin cell support. The other body butters, Mint Body Butter & Geranium Hands & Body contain ingredients like Coconut, Apricot, Soyabean, Grapeseed & Sweet Almond which are also bursting with benefits for the skin’s condition. The scents with the particular essential oils are subtle, yet refreshing. If you love mint, you’ll be tempted to eat the product (not suggesting it though) whilst the Jazz has a gentle Asian Fusion of Lemongrass and Jasmine.

Adding a bowl of water to a dry room during the winter months can assist with maintaining moisture in the rooms.It’s also important to ensure the heating is turned down whilst sleeping, as this can also draw moisture from your skin, leaving it feeling super-dry the following morning.

Castile Soap can be used to prevent the Keratosis pilaris becoming worse. Traditionally made with Olive Oil, you can include Jojoba Oil, Honey, Lavender and Vitamin E to your blend to keep your skin softly treated whilst washing up. I’ll write more about Castile Soap in the future blogs.

To conclude, Keratosis pilaris is a common skin condition affecting more youth than it does adults. The surface of the skin feels rough and bumpy, usually caused by clogged pores. The most effective way to treat it is by gently exfoliating to remove dead skin cells and encouraging the pores to become unblocked. Also, by keeping the area moisturised with natural products, avoiding those that are toxic or harsh to the skin. The ingredients to assist hydration should include Avocado, Jojoba, Coconut Oil, Sea Salt, Raw Honey, Lavender Essential Oil and Castile soap.

    Getting Ready for Summer

    Sunblocks All-Good & Babo

    Getting Ready for Summer

    The weather is changing and the sun will be coming out. Are you ready?

    What happened to the beginning of the year? One minute we’re putting our winter woollies on and watching the snow fall, the next, the blossoms have come and gone and April is almost finished. It’s taken me a while to get organised with ordering my next batch of Sunblocks for the summer. But finding the right ones for me came from trial and error as far back as I can remember.

    Growing up in Australia, I spent a lot of my days outside or at the beach jet-skiing with my siblings and friends.I remember the first time we went jet-skiing, we ached so much from doing it all wrong that we couldn’t move at the end of the day.We laughed so much and had such a great time.

    In Australia, the sun is so strong that it’s recommended to ‘Slip Slop and Slap’ protection all the time.Applying sunscreen to my face was always a risk for me.I tried using cricketers’ zinc but found it so harsh on my face.It became so hard that I could only remove it by scrubbing my already sensitive skin.If I used creamy sunscreens, my face would become clogged and prone to breaking out in Acne.Urgh, the dread for me trying to protect my skin without causing other problems.

    For quite some time, I found sunblock that is thicker in size than a regular lip balm which is easy to apply and suits my skin just right.Look for those with SPF Factor 30+. I apply mine before going out in the sunshine. Gently massage the sunblock it your skin, particularly around the eyes, nose and face. To slow down the aging process, avoid roasting your face directly under the sun.

    If you’re sharing sunblock with your immediate family, wipe the top off beforehand.This will prevent anything from one’s face being passed to yours.I don’t usually allow anyone else to use my sunblock.

    Wear a hat to shade your face, or a shirt/ T-shirt whilst walking around to prevent unnecessary burning and sun damage.When the clouds are out but the weather is muggy, be aware that you can still get burnt from the UV Rays of the sun.We don’t even realise how hot the sun until after our skin is stinging, red or covered in discoloured sunspots. Of course, you could style it up like Audrey Hepburn and Sophie Loren with a classy headscarf and huge sunglasses too!

    Keep yourself hydrated, preferably with water. Whilst we’re out in the sunshine swimming in the beach, lake, pool or river, we are refreshed and cooled down.When we get out to dry off, the sun draws not only the water from the surface of our skin, but that which is within.It’s important to remain hydrated, with water, fruits and other refreshing options available during the summer.

    After sun care is extremely important too. We often forget about taking care of our skin should be part of our daily life, as it’s the only one we’re going to get.Once we’re returned from enjoying the summer weather, beach and scenery, we start the whole age appropriate after care routine.This will ensure the skin is replenished from being outside. It will also keep that glowing tan healthy looking too.Re-hydrating the skin is just as important as drinking water.

    What we use on holidays or during the summer:
    • For the Kids, we use the Natural Baby Moisturising Oil which is easy to apply and gentle enough from their faces to their feet.
    • Dad uses the Hydrating Face Balm as it smells of Sandalwood and keeps his skin feeling wonderful soft.
    • For me, it’s a combination of products starting with my cleansing to ensure that the sunblock has been removed.Choose from either the Cypress Cleansing Balm which is made with Beeswax, Butters and Essential Oils or the Oil based Sunflower Cleanser
    • Then I use the Frankincense Face Serum with the Nourishing Face Balm to hydrate and protect my skin.
    • Depending on what we bring with us, we apply either the Jazz Body Butter , the Geranium Hands & Body or the Mint Body Butter on our shoulders, arms, tummy and legs.Either one is gorgeous with its natural scent and feels lush as it melts into the skin and keeps it hydrated for such a long time.
    • And don’t forget your feet especially if you’re planning to wear open shoes or sling-backs!!Peppermint Feet keeps those heels soft and helps prevent fungal infections and smelly feet. But if you’re expecting or nursing, use the Tango Twinkle Toes or the Lime Foot Repair instead.

    But don’t despair if you have damaged your skin already.I made the Sun Kissed Balm to assist with sunspots and discolouration caused by the sun.This product can only be used at night time to prevent your skin becoming more sensitive to the sun.

    This month I have bought extra Sunblocks.Should you wish to get some let me know so that I can do another bulk order for you.It will include a portion of the delivery cost to save you money ordering yourself.

    Road to Recovery

    Road to Recovery

    Road to Recovery

    After taking time out & getting back on track.
    Thanks for my gorgeous flowers & coming to visit me whilst in hospital K.A.H 🙂

    Following on from the last blog about ‘Taking Time out’. Whilst recently being in Hospital recovering from the Hernia Operation, I had plenty of time to think, rest, and study again. I don’t really have a high pain threshold which made my recovery seem to take longer than planned.

    I remember waking up and feeling groggy and hearing numbers being called out in German.They were calling out my low blood pressure numbers, but I was too late to tell the staff it was normal for me!!They had already given me a shot of morphine!!The other painkillers were being fed by drip – gosh for someone who rarely takes even Ibuprofen for the occasional headache, this was mega.

    Unable to move around, or change my positions freely, I felt quite restricted despite being in good spirits.You don’t even realise how much you need your stomach or core muscles until you are unable to use them. Coughing, laughing, and sneezing was so difficult to do whilst I was bandaged and recovering.I’m glad to say that 2 weeks post-operation, I seem to be back to normal, except I am not able to lift heavy items for a few more weeks. My kids are so happy as they look for any excuses not to help around anymore!! That’s so Not cool.

    With the excuse that I couldn’t do much, I took the time complete my Reflexology case studies and submit my final exam.It was one of those courses that needed a lot of motivation to study, write, and understand. I’m glad that I persevered and completed it.I’m happy to say that I received my Reflexology Diploma with Distinction to add to the other 5 completed courses.

    Choosing my Diplomas in Aromatherapy, Clinical Nutrition, Stress Management, Holistic Skincare Products, and Reflexology were so I could assist with a holistic approach to well-being when trying to help my customers.The one currently being studied is Holistic Pain Management. There is so much to grasp – not only how the Mind, Body and Spirit work together, but how there are so many alternative health solutions too. It’s ironic that whilst I was in so much pain and discomfort, I had to commence studying this subject.I look forward to helping my customers with alternative solutions instead of seeking drugs as the only option.

    In my youth when I was unwell, I had the pleasure of trying all sorts of alternative options. I tried the Herbalist, Chinese Medicine person with the brutal massage techniques and suction cups, the Reflexology, the Acupuncturist as well as the Dermatologist. I believe all of these experiences helped me comprehend what they do and how they can assist in bringing about well-being.Sometimes we should try another avenue to see if it works for us.These other options helped me so much in my quest to find my own well-being, irrespective of whether or not they worked for me.It’s only when you have boiled and drank a cup full of ‘secret herbs and barks’ from the Chinese Medicine person that you will ever understand the benefits and the hideous tastes at the same time!

    My tummy was so bloated from the medication that I stopped taking them altogether.Imagine what happens to your intestinal tract if you’re taking medications all the time?My elderly Italian neighbour gave me some dry figs and other fruits to help me.What also helped was increasing my water and herbal tea intake.I took Aloe Vera cleanser as well as make a Himalayan Sea Salt Water wash to drink.I tried not to use medicated options for helping my tummy as I wanted my Intestinal tract to flush out any build-up or irritations caused by the medications as quickly as possible.This also helps keep your skin healthy and clear.

    Then I taught my husband how to make an Italian Minestrone so that I could eat well without having to feel so ill.The recipe is below:

    MINESTRONE: Cut all sorts of veggies into chunks including Onion, carrots, cabbage, celery, mushrooms, spinach, long green beans cut smaller, potatoes for thickening the soup. You can also add peas and silver beat (or Swiss Chard). Salt, pepper, Italian Herbs, veggie stock and cover them with water.Then add a can of chopped up tomatoes, season to taste again.Add a little sugar to remove the acidity of the tomatoes.Cook until soft, squash the potatoes down to thicken and eat!

    For assisting the healing of my wounds, I mentioned in the last blog the benefits of Grapeseed Oil (Vitis vinifera) which comes from the seeds of grapes, a by-product of making wine.It contains Omega-3 fatty acids with the highest levels of Omega-6 Fatty Acids, compared to other Vegetable Oils. I made sure I had my Essentially Lili Products with me in hospital and at home.The one I have been applying to my wounds is Mint Body Butter whilst others have been using the Jazz Body Butter to prevent any scarring post-operation.I look forward to hearing the progress updates from the other operation buddies.

    Taking Time Out

    Taking Time Out

    Taking Time Out

    Allows You to Chillax, Relax & be kind to yourself whilst Recovering.

    Taking Time Out – Chillax, Relax & be kind to yourself, in order to get your health back on track.

    I recently wrote about our wonderfully fun travels in Italy … we love going there and enjoying everything it has to offer. Great food, wonderful beaches, fun people and other adventurers making their way to Italy. What I dreaded the most was the consequences of my indulgent eating habits catching up to me.

    And it did catch up, in a number of way. First with my weight, piling on a few too many kilos that made me feel uncomfortable and self-conscious.I would wear baggy clothes just to hide some of it.

    It also irritated my skin, as the build-up of Dairy products in my system eventually comes out on my hands. They were irritated, swollen, cracked, itchy and bleeding.Has this happened to you?

    I can never know how long it will take for my body to rid itself of the build-up of lactose in my system. But one thing it needs is time, persistence and patience.The irritations began in August and are still not 100% in October.That’s nearly 3 months of discipline.This just goes to show that there is never a quick overnight solution to long-term problems. Whilst I apply my products continuously throughout the day, the main factor that helps me resolve it is controlling my diet. I must ensure that it’s dairy-free to prevent Eczema become part of my life.Don’t get me wrong – I do enjoy some dairy products, I just should not eat them as they are not good for me and my body if I want to remain Eczema Free.

    In June, I weighed myself and was not happy with what the scales showed.Since returning from holidays in August, I cut back without totally eliminating carbs from my diet. I removed the dairy products which I’m intolerant to anyways, in order to allow my body the time needed to heal and get my hands sorted out again.I asked my family to help out too, with tasks like washing up, as even hot water can cause my skin to become irritated.It’s so frustrating and yet time, persistence and patience is needed for me to get the results I want.

    Today I am less bloated from changing what foods I have been eating. When weighing myself recently, I have lost 5.4 kilos which have allowed me to move down a notch on my belt. I am really pleased considering this is happened without doing gym-type exercise.I still have a while to go to reach and remain in my ideal weight bracket.

    The other thing is taking the advice from those that are older than us.Our 89-year-old neighbour recently passed away, leaving behind his wife of 61 years of marriage and 2 daughters.The years he suffered being unwell meant he spent a lot of time going back and forth between the hospital, the elderly people’s home, and his own place.It caused a lot of anguish and stress for his wife, never knowing if he would be well enough to just stay home without any need for assistance.We talked about his health and the advice she gave me was, ‘Don’t leave things unfixed or too late if they need to be resolved.Get them sorted out whilst you can.’ So it’s time for me to finally go and get myself sorted and take time out.

    Diastasis Recti, an umbilical hernia is when your intestine or other tissues inside your abdominal cavity bulge through the weak spot around the belly button, leading to an alien-looking “outie” belly button.In addition to protruding outward, the belly button area may also become swollen and a bit painful.

    My hernia pops out like an alien hand especially if I have eaten too much.It was bothering me for a while now, and this year I have decided to get it sorted out. On the 24th of October, I’ll be having this operation, removing that little alien and whatever else shouldn’t be there, whilst having the split muscle meshed back in.It will mean resting up for 10 days as I will be unable to lift or put too much emphasis on my core muscles. I could risk damaging the operation repair and having the muscle tear again.I will be able to just chillax, relax and allow my family here take care of me for a change. Though the downside is having to put all production of new products on hold for a while.

    About the Diastasis Recti – which ironically can also be caused by doing lots of core exercises!
    The most common can develop during the 2nd trimester, peak during the 3rd and remain after delivery.During the pregnancy, the hormones such as relaxin are released which can weaken the tissues of the abs.Whilst the belly is growing, the ab muscles are thinned and stretched, adding pressure to the whole abdominal region.Months after the birth of the child, the abdominal muscles can naturally come together with a little, improving any diastasis recti, though it’s not always totally resolved.It’s even more common for those giving birth to twins or having multiple pregnancies where the initial hernia was already existing.

    Diastasis recti isn’t a serious condition, nor particularly dangerous, but it makes sense to treat it before it gets bigger. It could lead to postural problems and other symptoms if left too long.Speak with your Doctor, Gynaecologist, or physical therapist especially if you have pain and discomfort in your abdominal area or back. Always get medical help if you see other signs of a hernia, have severe gastrointestinal issues, notice swelling around your abs that lasts more than several days. You should visit your primary doctor or even a general surgeon to have a CT scan if you have a true concern about having a hernia, since this may require medical intervention.

    Other factors for hernias include:
    • Being Obese or gaining weight, especially around the belly area;
    • Being over the age of 35;
    • Having injuries. trauma or surgery to the abdominal area;
    • Repetitive core exercises such as Pilates and stomach crunches could increase your risk;
    • Exercises and sports that require you to arch your back and twist from side to side can also increase your risk.These include sports like Tennis, Golf, Gymnastics, Yoga, Biking, Weight-lifting and even swimming.
    • Injecting the abdominal area with steroids can cause the muscles to weaken.
    • Who would have thought that being naturally flexible can cause the connective tissues to stretch and thin out?

    Other natural ways of preventing a hernia:
    1. Do some physical therapy;
    2. Make sure your exercises are specific for strengthening the core without further damaging the area;
    3. Try to prevent adding abdominal pressure to the area – lifting, carrying;
    4. Keeping a healthy weight; and
    5. Treating hernias before they become bigger.

    As mentioned in the latest newsletter, the benefits of Grapeseed Oil for scarring is amazing.In case you missed the newsletter. Grapeseed Oil (Vitis vinifera) comes from the seeds of grapes, a by-product of making wine. It contains Omega-3 fatty acids with the highest levels of Omega-6 Fatty Acids, compared to other Vegetable Oils.Some of the benefits of Grapeseed Oil include:
    * It is an emollient that is rich in Vitamins C, D and E, making it great for reducing wrinkles, stretch marks, and scars;
    * It helps tighten the skin.
    * It plays a protective role in the body as the oil contains linoleic acid which converts to GLA (gamma-linoleic acid) in the body.
    * It contains no trans fat.
    * Grapeseed Oil has an ideal thickness for cosmetic products.
    * Grapeseed Oil helps treat acne with the polyphenols and antioxidants contained within.
    * It works well as an able moisturiser, helping to balance out both dry and oily patches on the skin.
    * If used as a toner, the Grapeseed Oil can not only cleanse the skin but penetrate the pores to resolve breakouts.
    * It’s a great oil to use for a Massage therapy as it is absorbed by the skin well.
    * For those seeking a moisturising & conditioning oil for their hair, Grapeseed Oil is lighter than both Olive & Coconut, and doesn’t leave the hair feeling greasy.It can also help reduce dandruff and hair loss, strengthening the hair, allowing it to grow faster.

    Essentially Lili Products containing Grapeseed Oil include:
    * Mint Body Butter is my husband’s favourite.
    * Jazz Body Butter – containing Lemongrass and Jasmine, which is one of my favourites.
    * Sun Kissed Balm – for Sunspots & Discolouration, rich in Vitamins contained in Grapeseed Oil.
    * Sunflower Cleanser – For those of you suffering with Acne, cleansing is key to removing excess from your pores and keeping it hydrated helps it from drying out.
    * Rosey Hemp Hands – keeping hands soft during the winters.Recently used on my customer’s Dog Paws too! :)This product is currently on offer as there are a few left.
    * Go Molly -to help repair the skin and treat Molluscum / Flying Warts.
    * Pox Potion – rich in vitamins to help get rid of any scars caused by Chicken Pox. This is made fresh upon request.

    I will ensure my jars of Mint Body Butter or Jazz Body Butter are applied to the area to prevent any scarring post-operation.

    So for the time being, I will continue my quest to help my body from within with my new eating habits. And I will get my Umbilical Hernia sorted out on the 24th of October. My plan is to be offline whilst I recuperate. Though knowing me, I will still post on Instagram & Facebook to keep in touch.If you need anything, please order your products before the 22nd of October so that I can send them out on the 23rd.I hope you understand this need for Taking Time Out for me.

    In the meantime, we have had some wonderful stories and results from customers using a variety of the Essentially Lili Products. Fusion of Essential Oils

    Fusion of Essential Oils

    Fusion of Essential Oils

    That make you feel uplifted &can take you on a sensory journey to another place.

    I love to experiment with the Essential Oils I have, but don’t use enough. We often hear a lot about ingredients like Lavender and Frankincense, but not necessarily others like Lemongrass or Jasmine.

    Whilst making my customer’s products, I decided to make myself something new using Grapefruit White, Lemongrass and Jasmine.The Vegetable Oils selected also keep the skin hydrated, are rich in Vitamins and help conditions like varicose veins. At the moment it’s called, Jazz Body Butter , but this could change depending on the vote from my customers.

    Mine and my husband’s instant reaction was that it has an Asian fusion that smelt a lot like yummy Thai food.He was worried about this new product being the replacement of his other favourite Mint Body Butter. He loves how it smells like Aero Bar and using the product feels like smothering yourself in chocolate.The best part of using these body butter is that it melts onto the skin as soon as it’s in contact with your skin.

    The benefits of using the Body Butters is that they contain Vegetable Oils that are rich in vitamins A, B, C, E and Omega 6 Fatty Acids and Lecithin. Wouldn’t you love to use a body butter that helps your skin repair as well as keep it nourished?The ingredients chosen for the 2 body butters also help with Varicose Veins which is a bonus.

    I also decided to change the blend of the Hemp Hands.It was originally made with Vanilla and Macadamia, which sounds delish like an ice-cream combo.But I wasn’t sure it was the right blend for this product.What I love is asking my Customers what they think and what they would like to have in their products.And just like that – out went Vanilla and Macadamia – in came Rose, Palmarosa and Rosemary to make the Rosey Hemp Hands products.

    For Kids, I made the Natural Baby Moisturising Oil. It has a gentle combination including Lavender which can be applied from face to feet. The ingredients are chosen help nourish the skin as also have the antiseptic properties for cuts and rashes they may have to overcome. The other product I have for Newborn babies is the Happy Babies Hydrosol which is made using Aloe Vera and floral Hydrolats. This product helps soothe and calm skin issues like baby rashes which are common during their early years.

    Sometimes, all-natural products behave according to the weather:When it’s super cold, they can become hard, solid and difficult to apply; When it’s very hot, they can become soft and often runny.But being resourceful, we just need to think outside the box when trying to apply these!

    Clean hands is a must for applying our products!Using your thumbnail to remove the balms is the other suggestion as it’s the best way to apply any of the Essentially Lili all-natural skincare products to your face, hands, feet and body!Your thumbnail allows you to apply throughout the day without needing to carry around a spatula!!

    When I’m travelling in the summertime, I have found my products can become super soft from the heat.So if you are travelling by plane, keep your Essentially Lili products with your checked in luggage as it will remain cooler in the hold. I usually keep my sample pots in my carry-on luggage as it’s small enough to reapply during the flight and prevent my skin from dehydrating.When I arrive at the destination, I put my jars and sample pots into the fridge at the hotel/apartment/resort.Not only will the products re-set, but they will be lovely and cool when you need to reapply after being out in the sun all day.

    When the weather is too cold, they can become solid and hard.The solution for the kid’s product is to run the bottom of the jar under warm running water to soften the Cocoa Butter and then give it a good shake. Sometimes, the product clogs the inner tube – so I suggest that you remove it, rinse it out, dry it and then re-insert it.

    The best thing about all-natural products are that whilst I am making them fresh, they will not be tainted with other chemical or synthetic ingredients.Unlike commercially made products that are made to squeeze out with the same consistency, all-natural products that are untainted do what they should do ‘ naturally’.So when you receive your products, they will hopefully arrive quickly and without being stuck under a heater in the Post-Person’s delivery van which can make them look like a tsunami!

    But if they do, just remember you can put your products in the fridge to re-set them!

    BLOG PARTICIPATION:

    If you had to choose between Peppermint and Lemongrass, which would you prefer?
    If you had to rename Jazz Body Butter, what would you suggest?
    Some of the choices were Asian Fusion, Fusion Body Butter, and White Jasmine which is a play on the 3 Essential oils! We would love to hear your suggestions … don’t be shy!

    Dry Skin During Winter

    Renew Balm Dry Skin During Winter

    Dry Skin In Winter

    Our 5 year old playing in the snow without gloves during Swiss winter
    caused his hands to dry out, hurting his knuckles when he tried to bend them.

    Dry Skin and the Winter months wherever you are, the weather can be cruel to especially if you are prone to your skin drying out quickly, cracking and becoming irritated.Eczema loves to play havoc during the cold season which is not pleasant if you suffer badly.

    Last year, during the cold Swiss winter, our 5-year-old son enjoyed playing in the snow at kindergarten without his gloves.After a few days, his hands and knuckles were red and sore from drying out.He found it hard to dress and play with his Lego as bending his hands hurt a lot.He was also in a habit of using lots of soap when washing his hands and not rinsing properly, which was also drying the skin.

    For him, we started monitoring him whilst he washed his hands to make sure there was no residual soap. as well as drying the water off. At bedtime, we applied Renew Balm to his hands, then put a pair of socks on his hands to keep the product contained, allowing it to penetrate into his dry skin whilst he slept.We only had to carry on with this routine for a week, which gave his dry skin a chance to repair.

    Here are a few other suggestions for taking care of your Dry Skin During Winter Months.

    1. Hydration
    Make sure you keep your body hydrated and replenished with plenty of water.This helps your body to function, flush out toxins and keeps your skin looking fabulous.The recommended daily intake of fluids for children aged 5-8 years of age, 5 glasses (1 litre); from 9-12 years of age, 7 glasses (1.5 liters); from 13+ to Adults, 8-10 glasses (2 litres).

    2. Avoid Hot Water
    Make sure you only wash your face and neck with lukewarm or tepid water.This includes your baths, showers, shaving, cleansing and exfoliating. When your skin is sensitive and prone to drying out, you want to make sure that the temperature is not going to cause more damage and break the tiny veins in your face.Blotches are likely to happen when super hot water is applied to your face.If you really want to have a steamy hot shower, ensure the water is on your back or chest, but not directly on your face.

    3. Be Gentle with Your Skin – all the time!
    Try not to use harsh ingredients on your face. Avoid techniques that require you to pull or stretch your skin.Use gentle circular upward motions, and pamper your skin by tapping and stimulating the blood flow to your face. This will help you feel wonderful as you get ready to start your day or prepare for a restful night.

    4. Moisturise Your Face
    It’s important to ensure you keep your face moisturised for your day out in the cold weather. Use a good one that keeps your skin feeling soft and nourished, without the need to keep reapplying throughout your day. Often products are water-based and fluid, which tend to be drawn from the skin quicker than butter and oil-based products.
    We make a range of moisturisers for various ages which help make the skin feel soft and nourished.
    Natural Baby Moisturising Oil For Babies & Children,
    Youth Face Balm for Under 30s,
    Hydrating Face Balm for men Over 30s,
    Nourishing Face Balm for women Over 30s and
    Diamond Era Balm for women Over 50s.
    We also make the Vitamin Rich Mens Face Balm and Vitamin Rich Womens Face Balm if your skin needs more tender loving care due to irritation or damage, and Evanesce Balm for those that have Acne which needs treatment.

    5. Don’t Forget Your Hands, Feet & Body
    Your body also needs to stay nourished in order to seal the moisture in your skin.The butter-based products literally melt onto your skin, helping it to stay soft and nourished.Our Geranium Hands & Body is lush and great for applying all over the body and suits expecting and nursing mums.For those that love Peppermint, Mint Body Butter is so delish you will be tempted to eat it … please don’t though! Peppermint Feet is a favourite for those that have cracked heels. It also helps with fungal infections and smelly feet.Though Peppermint shouldn’t be used if you’re expecting and nursing, so try Tango Twinkle Toes instead!Made with Tangerine, my daughter and I named it imagining expectant & nursing mums wanting to dance with their little ones whilst they were being taken care of!

    6. Rug Up & Stay Warm With Breathable Fibers
    Prevention is always best, so make sure you keep your gloves on when out in the cold weather. Wearing Cottons also helps your skin breathe and prevents irritation.Avoid wearing synthetics, polyesters, and other fabrics which can cause your skin to sweat and itch. Pyjamas feel nicer when they are cotton too, particularly if you have skin prone to getting irritated whilst you sleep.

    7. Have A Cleansing Routine at Night Time.
    Did you know you are only meant to cleanse at night time?The reason for this is because our skin is subjected to pollution, dust and smog from traffic and the environment we live in. It builds upon our skin and if we don’t cleanse it out, the muck can begin to clog our pores.Make sure you are gentle when cleansing and to include your neck and shoulders if they are also exposed to the environment. Remove your makeup with either Almond or Coconut Oil.If you don’t like using oils, try removing makeup with a little Aloe Vera instead. Then you can use our Cypress Cleansing Balm which is made with Beeswax, Butters and Essential Oils.It feels wonderful as it penetrates the skin’s reserves – it’s just like having an all-natural Botox fill!

    8. Monitor the Temperature in the Home
    During the winter months, the temperature at home is usually really warm and toasty. This often high temperature dries out the moisture in the air and affects us with dry skin the most.In the mornings, you should start by opening your windows and changing the air in the home, refreshing any stuffiness. This is particularly important if you have sensitivity to dust or dust mites that thrive in warm climates.In the evenings, you can place bowls of water in your rooms to prevent your skin from dehydrating. You will be pleasantly surprised how much water remains in the bowl the following morning. You can also turn on your humidifiers to replace any moisture which is lost from having the heating on.Steamers are also great, especially if you are able to add Essential Oils to freshen and help clear any signs of Congestion and Sinuses.
    We make Concentrated Serums which mums have been using in the bath to help their little ones with congestion and coughs. The carrier oil makes the products safe to use in the bath, which are Kids Breathe Easy Concentrate and Breathe Easier Concentrate .They can also be applied to the chest, feet, and tips of the nose for easy breathing.For infants, it can be used in a diffuser 30 minutes before being put to bed and on nearby linen. From 1 year of age up, you can apply to their pyjamas and feet. The direction is with the Product information.

    9. Patience …
    Patience is key especially if your skin dries out very quickly during the winter months. You have to keep applying, keep drinking fluids, keep yourself rugged up, stay moisturised and monitored your clothing and temperature all the time to prevent your skin from cracking.It’s often frustrating especially if your skin feels like sandpaper and looks like it’s been hacked by a knife.With time, and persistence, it will get better for sure. Just be patient!

    10. Lastly… start all over again from Step No 1
    And we go back to the top .. Hydration, Avoid Hot Water, Be Gentle With Your Skin – All the Time, Moisturise Your Face, Don’t Forget Your Hands, Feet & Body, Rug Up & Stay Warm with Breathable Fibers, Have a Cleansing Routine at Night Time, Monitor the Temperature in the Home and have Patience!

    These are the steps I found worked best for me and when I don’t do these, my skin suffers for it.

    And to treat yourself, if you love mucking around with Masks & Facials, you might enjoy doing this too:
    1 teaspoon of Pink Clay mixed with 2 teaspoons of Aloe Vera, mixed onto your palm.
    Apply to your face and allow to set.
    When it dries, apply some warm water to soften before removing with either tissues or cotton wool.

    The pink clay has a unique blend of Kaolinite, Iron, Montmorillonite, Illite, and Calcite. It helps to detoxify your skin, removing any dead cells and allows the creation of new ones whilst leaving you feeling refreshed.

    Evolution & Experiments

    Evolution & Experiments

    Evolution & Experiments

    With Jar sizes, Labels & Logo Designs / Development,
    as we begin Re-branding & the Next Phase.

    Evolution means development, progression, change and transformation.  They are a great way to describe the evolution of Essentially Lili.

    When we started, everything was a process of making quick decisions. Our Jump in with Both Feet approach concerned the labels, our colour codes, information for the customer, designing the logo and building the brand.

    There will always be someone who does not understand what we like; nor will they comprehend what’s within our heart and drives us forwards.Colour schemes, for example, is a personal preference.We have had humorous and frustrating times making labels from Essentially Lili’s inception.

    We tried all sorts of templates, fonts and had some printer malfunctions too. The worst was the classic ‘We have no ink left in the cartridges after printing a few sheets’!This is when we gave all Essentially Lili products their own colour code.

    The labels process is still evolving and improving.We hope to change the design to incorporate all the things we loved about the Evolution process.They will be printed professionally so that we can up-grade Our Brand to the next level.

    One thing we didn’t want to do was hastily run to the finish line.We felt so much was important to learn and know beforehand, as we aimed for a little perfection and ultimate customer satisfaction.

    Regarding the Evolution of Products, there is always space for improvement after making the batch.  When we make the batch, we check to see how the product sets, then how the balm or serum feels on the skin and combine this with the Customer’s feedback.

    Sometimes, the products made don’t even make it passed the blending phase or the setting stages when the feedback is ready!

    One time, we were making the Mint Body Butter in a whipped cream formation.  The smell of Peppermint was so delish that we had to keep reminding ourselves it was not for internal consumption!  The door-bell rang when our child arrived home from school.We leaned the whisk to the side of the mixing bowl as we buzzed the door open when we heard the massive CRASH!

    The bowl of liquid balm mixed with peppermint fell and was all over the stove, leaving a fraction of the product for us to save!   Urgh, the horror, the clean-up, the butter and oil that needed to be collected, and that delightful smell which we were unable to put on our bodies.  Lesson learned … take the whisk out or don’t answer the door!!

    Another time, we were experimenting with making an oil and water-based lotion for the first time. We put the blend into a container to set it in the fridge. A few days later, our son decided he wanted something from the fridge and climbed in reaching for the top shelf where the container was located.  It flew right over the top of him and crashed onto the floor!!!

    The water content went one way whilst the oil base went the other!  What a crazy sticky watery mess… though he did provide the feedback about the product which hadn’t worked out!

    Sometimes, the product concoction is great for those that use it, whilst the chronic suffers finds the blend not strong enough.Other times, the mix of Essential oils is so spot on that the intended results occur after a few weeks of usage and helps the customer gain their ‘life back’.  Refer to Testimonials.

    Our main focus is being able to help people not suffer from aches and discomfort.We have to be open to receiving both positive and negative feedback.This helps us to improve, change, transform, develop, and ultimately Evolve Essentially Lili’s products for Customer satisfaction.

    BLOG PARTICIPATION:

    We would love to hear from you.Tell us in the comments below about your Essentially Lili Product(s) that you have used and what you love the most about them?

    And for those that are brave, we would love to hear about when you tried to do something for the first time, but it had an EPIC fail as we did in our blending experiments!!   It’s not for criticising anyone, but to look back and laugh about what happened instead!We would love to give some products away to those that participate in this!!You have to let us know what you like!
